Hehe, it's always nice to see a reference to the old and massive "Feldgrau Forum Photo Riddle?" thread... In this case Korvettenkapitän Heinrich Hoffmann...

Cheers,

First Stuka Pilot to win the Knights Cross

#167

Post by AlifRafikKhan » 11 Jul 2010, 18:49

Paul-Werner Hozzel joined the Artillerie-Regiment 2 in 1931 and transferred to the Luftwaffe in 1935. He took command of the 2nd Staffel of Jagdgeschwader 20 on 1 September 1938 and shortly afterwards was promoted to Hauptmann...

At the outbreak of World War II he participated in the Invasion of Poland in 1939. Hozzel was then put in command of I.Gruppe Stuka-Geschwaders 1. This Gruppe also participated in the Battle of France and in the invasion of Norway. Hozzel, as the first Stuka pilot, was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on 8 May 1940 in representation of his Gruppe’s success. This includes the sinking of military vessels, 60,000 tons of merchant shipping and the attacks against the fortresses Akershus and Oscarsborg Fortress...

The First Pilot Scored 100th Victory on the Western Front

#168

Post by AlifRafikKhan » 14 Aug 2010, 14:02

Egon Mayer (born 19 August 1917 in Konstanz at the Bodensee, killed in action March 2, 1944 near Montmédy) was a German World War II fighter ace who served in the Luftwaffe from 1937 until his death in 1944. He shot down 102 enemy aircraft. All his victories were claimed over the Western Front and included 26 four-engine bombers, 51 Supermarine Spitfires and 12 P-47 Thunderbolts. Egon Mayer was the first fighter pilot to score 100 victories entirely on the western front. His final command was Geschwaderkommodore of the JG 2 fighter wing...

Dear Igor,

we are speaking of the diamonds-winner Wolfgang Lüth, Kapitän zur See.
Only interesting for you in his bio: He wears the "Gauehrenzeichen des Reichsgaues Wartheland für Verdienste im Volkstumskampf".

Hi!

I think another very old (the oldest) General is missing (or I have overlooked this name?):

HENKE Gerhard, Generalmajor 1.2.43,
born 23.09.1895
died 21.10.1990 105 years, 1 month, 28 days. Is this not the oldest General?

Hi!

Very old was also Generaloberst Adolf Strauß, 6.9.79-20.3.73 (For health reasons, he stepped down from command on January 16, 1942!).

In addition to this a young Wehrmacht-Generalmajor, March 1 1945, Peter von der Groeben, 9.12.1903-29.5.2002.

The First (only?) civilian recepient of the Ritterkreuz is Paul Hellmann, who was a Handelsmarine Kapitän on the MS "Osorno", a blockade breaker. Kapitän Hellmann recieved the Knight's Cross on 06.01.1944 from Grossadmiral Dönitz and was the first civilian, as a member of the Merchant navy, to recieve this prestigeous award. He later recieved the rank as Oberleutnant z. See in the Kriegsmarine.

Btw, my old source link is a dead end since several years and I wonder if this once excellent norwegian collection of photographs is availible somewhere else on the Net...

the first pilot in Africa receiving DKiG

#179

Post by AlifRafikKhan » 12 Jun 2011, 17:57

On 1 December 1941 Hans-Joachim Marseille was awarded the German Cross in Gold, the first pilot in Africa to be so honored. This award was given for six missions or events which of themselves would each merit the Iron Cross 1st Class. This decoration had only been created 14 days previously!

With 12 kills in the space of 14 days Marseille had brought his tally to 33. A few hours before the airfield of Ain el Gazala was to be vacated in the face of the enemy advance, Marseille was ordered to the Gruppe's command post. He had just returned from a combat mission where he had brought down another enemy plane, his 34th, when he was given the order.

Arriving at the command post, he reported to the Gruppenkommandeur, then was received by Generalfeldmarschall Albert Kesselring.

"Smiling Max", as he was called by the British, extended his hand to the young pilot and held Marseille's right for a long time in his own.

"Leutnant Marseille, by orders of the Führer and as the first German pilot in Africa to receive such an honor, I award you the German Cross in Gold. I would personally like to thank you for your bravery in combat. You are unfortunate, my dear Marseille, for just a few days ago the number of kills as a prerequisite for the Knight's Cross was raised from 20 to 40, otherwise I would have gladly presented you with this prestigious award. For my part, I have no doubt whatsoever that you will soon attain this number. In doing so, I wish you the best of success and a soldier's good fortune."

"Thank you, Herr Feldmarschall", replied the pilot and permitted the "Fried Egg", as this decoration had been known since its inception, to be pinned onto his field blouse.

The Gruppenkommandeur added his congratulations: "Continue on, Marseille, and I wish you pilot's luck, for you're going to need it on those risky sorties you fly."

Finally, it was time to celebrate with his colleagues. Several bottles of Marsala wine and a bottle of French cognac donated by Feldmarschall Kesselring formed the basis for a jovial time, during which Marseille was one of the more "relaxed" pilots.
