Infantry assaults in minor engagements

#1

Hello--- I'm looking for information on how the Wehrmacht's infantry in the east would have engaged the "pockets" during smaller (company, battalion) battles. I've learned about specific divisions encountering surprise resistance in the forests; could anyone tell me how the enemy might have been engaged in this situation? Would recon units always have found them, or would platoons or even squads be sent out to draw fire when the enemy is unseen? Would artillery be attached to infantry in such low numbers? I can find NOTHING, either strategically, tactically, or historically to educate me on this, all help is most appreciated!
