Hello

In the years 50/60 , K.H Helms Liesenhoff published " Gretchen in uniform " followed by a serie .........Gretchen without uniform , Gretchen in the defeat ,
Gretchen after the war ...................somewhat romanticized but a good insight of these days
I read them in the french version ,many years ago ,but you could find them in english

Hello Niklas,

There are very many good books on both of these subjects, in German and English, and a lot of them are listed in the "Recommended Reading" thread at the top of the Women in the Reich section of the Forum.

Women in the concentration camps were generally titled Aufseherinnen rather than Helferinnen, so if you're particularly interested in those women, you might try searching the word Aufseherin.

Monsieur Lebel,

A friend gave me a more recent copy of Gretchen in Uniform many years ago--with its cover partly "censored". I think he was afraid of "Fräulein Valkyrie's" reaction to the cover :D .... But you're right, despite its sensationalist cover, the novel itself is a good insight into the mood and mindset of the period!

The 1974 British cover, no less scandalous for its time than the 1953 version:

Best,
~Vikki

Christabel Bielenberg was an Englishwoman married to a German lawyer who was arrested after the plot of July 20th, 1944 (he survived). She lived in Germany throughout the war. After, she wrote a book recounting her experiences. It was published in Great Britain under the title The Past Is Myself and in the U.S. as Ride Out the Dark.
