Yes, the wedding dress is unusual.
Why the black?

I don't know the full circumstances of the photo but it used to be an old Wendish Lutheran custom for brides to wear black wedding dresses.

While I can definitely sympathise with that custom , there's no shortage of brides wearing black, dark-colored, or even print dresses in the many in this thread. A few from a quick look:

I have wondered whether then, as now, there was the custom of women not wearing white if they'd been married previously. On the other hand, in some cases, with wartime rationing and shortages, it may have been a case of their wearing whatever they had that was appropriate. Or, as Larry suggests at http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 7#p1314307, there's also the possibility that photos in which the women are carrying flowers but not wearing white are anniversary rather than wedding photos.

Best,

Thankyou for the information on the black wedding dresses.

It states that these were popular from 1830 - 1900.
The Bride must have been wearing her great
grandmothers wedding dress. Perhaps in keeping with
family traditions?

Hello von thoma,

I believe that's a card for birthday wishes, rather than a wedding photo?
