Willi,
I was apologizing for my own off-topic post - I know how easy it is to get carried away :)
Looking forward to your G4 information.

Yes I think it is the Autostadt museum that has the early convertible KdF car. At one time I assumed it was the cornerstone ceremony car 43803 but I think this might be the one in the photo of the cars being supposedly broken up with hammers. It is probably more likely that it is the Hitler car and as driven by Eva B. There was a series of 12 convertibles made. Göring had one delivered to him. Ley had one as head of the DAF, building the KdF wagen, Ferry Porsche had one and obviously some others as well, no doubt all high ranking personalities, but I am not sure who. Likely candidates might be people connected with the motor industry, such as head of the NSKK. The photo of Eva driving is most interesting. I have a photo of Hitler in the car sometime in 1944.

I've just realised that I am probably wrong quoting Ley as the owner of a cabriolet version of the KdF wagen, maybe some other 'Beetle' fans will be able to help.
There is a series of KdF Wagens in a photograph on a stage backdrop with all the pomp of an official occasion, it is the 1st KdF Wagens to come off the production lines and dated 1941. The first cars are lined up and the registration plates say who the cars will go to. KdF #1 is lined up for Ley, and clearly in the photograph it is a saloon.

There is at least one, probably more, photos of Ley looking enthusiastic and standing next to a cabrio, is this just a shot of another occasion, or is this a cabrio being given to Ley? If so he is probably the only person except someone like Ferry Porsche who 'owned' more than one.

I will try and find a good large copy of the photo.
regards
Matt

Here's another pic of IA-148564, same plate number as the Hitler Birthday car and "Eva Braun" photo and fitted with the same external horns and Notek light as in that photo. From the reaction of the crowd may we presume that der Führer is inside?

Sir: Thank you for that book. It is best I have read on Eva Braun and brings many other question into focus.

I saw somewhere that Eva Braun's car was a MERCEDES 170 V convertible, offered in 39 for her birthday. I cannot see this information in this post.
Is it right ? Some one can help me to know ?

Hello Luat,
You may be thinking of the infamous gold Mercedes 540 K http://evabraunscar.blogspot.com/. AFAIK the provenance of this car has never been verified and many regard it as a hoax.

Matt,

Sorry about the late reply, I just realized that the picture I posted earlier is also in Blaine Taylor's book "Hitler's Chariots Vol. 3: Volkswagen - ..". The quality is sligtly better, and the last 5 numbers on the license plate are ...48564. According to Mr. Taylor, this was the car given to Hitler for his 50th birthday - there is another picture of it in the book, without the headlight covers, added horns(?) and Notek light, but the license plate is clearly visible - 1A-148564 - it probably is the same car.

Peter
The Mercedes here was the last one delivered to the Reich Chancellery Garage in 1939/40. It is today sitting at the Ottawa War Museum. It is the only one in the fleet with the straight bumper.

The car (KDF Wagen Cabrio) in which we believe we see Eva Braun and Hitler is at the Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg. This is the vw38 prototype number 38/31 Type 15A manufactured at the end of 1938 and given to Hitler for his 50th birthday on April 20, 1939 at the same time as a Mercedes-Benz "Typ Grosser Mercedes" w150 (770). The registrations of these two cars are part of the series of numbers reserved for vehicles assigned to Hitler's use (IA-148 = IA for Berlin). Hitler's cars attached to Berchtesgaden were registered IIB-215 (II-B = Oberbayern). Of the 88 W150 chassis produced, Hitler used ten of them. New Offener Tourenwagen (IA-148 461, 148 764, 148 768, 148 485, 148 655, 148 697, IIB-215 289 and 215 290). A Pullman Limousine (IA-148 696). These are cars used in public. Today the known survivors are 148461 (private collection USA), 148 768 (private collection Russia), 148 697 (Canadian War Museum Ottawa Canada) 148 696 (private collector Philadelphia, USA)

Hello ucans,
Fascinating. Thanks for these very valuable posts. The sad irony is that not one of the "Volk" for whom the car ostensibly was built ever got to redeem their stamp booklets to claim one.
Cheers,
Max
