Great photos, both here and the last post on the previous page, Chris44. Thanks for posting them.

It's interesting that Anne Gunhild wears the Wiking cufftitle on her uniform.

Best regards,

You can also see her wearing a Frontkjemper silver medal on her left breast pocket. The Frontkjemper (Frontfighter) depicted a medieval Norwegian warrior brandishing a sword and displaying a shield.

Also here you can clearly see the Wiking cufftitle on her uniform.

Great photos, Helge!

However, just want to point out that the caption of the photo of the three nurses above, at http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 8#p1706598, has right and left reversed. Anne Gunhild, wearing the Iron Cross, is actually on the left. The women in the middle and on the right have just been awarded the Kriegsverdienstkreuz mit Schwertern (War Merit Cross with Swords).

Best,

~Vikki

Thanks for the clarification. Without you everything would be less accurate.

Best,

Hello,

here's the name of another female recipient of the Iron Cross never listed anywhere before:

Stabshelferin Marieluise Schmitz

Source: Vorarlberger Tagblatt of June 9th, 1944; 27. Jahrgang; No.134; p.4
http://anno.onb.ac.at/cgi-content/anno? ... =4&zoom=36

Translation:

From neighbouring regions

Woman from Lindau receives the Iron Cross

Army Stabshelferin Marieluise Schmitz from Lindau, daughter of retired
Oberbaurat [senior construction councellor] Wilhelm Schmitz was
decorated with the Iron Cross 2nd Class for showing exceptionally
brave behaviour in a critical situation during her service in the East.

Marieluise Schmitz has served with the Wehrmacht for four years already,
amongst them two years on the Eastern front. At the moment she's on
leave at home in Lindau.

Unfortunately no details are provided when the bestowal was or of any details of her feat. It may have happened months before appearing in the paper. At this time even deaths of Knight's Cross holders where often reported with a delay of two months or more by Vorarlberger Tagblatt.

Best regards
Torsten

The nurses Elfriede Scherhaus and Frieda Gessert, assigned to an Infanterie Regiment fighting on the Eastern Front, have received for their courage the iron cross second class in November 1914.
