50. Infanterie-Division

Postby USAF1986 on 04 Nov 2009 04:38

Here are updates for the 50. Infanterie-Division.

Best regards,
Shawn

50. Infanterie-Division was formed on 26 August 1939 from the Grenzkommandantur Küstrin. Although initially formed as part of the 2. Welle (wave), it was reorganized on 15 November 1939 as a division of the 1. Welle.
After seeing combat in the invasions of Poland, France and Greece, the division took part in the invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941, fighting on the southern sector under the 11. Armee. Following the Crimean campaign, during which it helped capture Sevastopol in June 1942, the division fought in the Cacausus and the Kuban. After returning to the Crimea in late 1943, the division was destroyed in May 1944 at Sevastopol. Reformed from the remnants that had been evacuated from the Crimea, the division fought in East Prussia where it was largely destroyed in the Heiligenbeil pocket. The remnants went into Russian captivity at Pillau.

Hello Shawn,

Do you have any sources for Oberst Ribbert ?

I have found the following in the Forum für deutsche Geschichte:

http://forum.balsi.de/index.php?topic=4739.0
Jan-Hendrik provides information about an Oberst Ribbert taking over command of 50 ID. It's my understanding that Major Dickore (Ib) may have taken command after Domansky's death, but was wounded in late April, whereupon Ribbert takes over.

http://forum.balsi.de/index.php?topic=1675.0
Mention would be made of an Oberst Ribbert in Hans J. Pantenius' Letzte Schlacht an der Ostfront , published in 2001 by Mittler & Sohn. Another post mentions a Ribbert would have been promoted to the rank of Hauptmann in 1937 and served as Chef 14. (PzAbw.) Kp/IR 87 on 03.01.1939.

The last information probably taken from the following site:
http://gliederungundstellenbesetzung.blogspot.com/2008_04_06_archive.html

Thanks,

Mehner's Die deutsche Wehrmacht 1939-1945 lists the following:

Generalmajor Kurt Domansky, 4.45-16.4.1945
Oberst Ribbert [Kdr. Gr.Rgt. 121], 16.4.1945-

However, I used Domansky's date of death as given by Bradley, et al. in Die Generale des Heeres band 3: 28.04.1945 Stutthof/Frische Nehrung/OPr.

To muddy the waters a bit more, in Quiet Flows the Rhine: German General Officer Casualties in World War II, French L. MacLean gives 26.04.1945 as Domansky's date of death.

Best regards,
Shawn
