The Loot of Manchuria

Postby Boomerang1996 on 22 Aug 2012 23:55

I am not referring the rape or the slave labor of the Japanese soldiers done by the Soviet troops. What I am talking about is the Soviet atrocities against the Manchus. Have you guys heard of the Soviet loot of Manchuria after Operation August Storm? Much of the Chinese ancient treasures were stolen there. Factories and homes were also looted.

A Chinese article I found: http://bbs.tiexue.net/post_4257009_1.html

To clarify, yes, I do understand Chinese. Let me translate the article, in the article:
During 1945~1946, the Soviet continually transfer the looted goods from Manchuria to Russia, total loss of the RoC worth 1.36 billion USD, that's not including the looted gold, silver, and diamond. The total loss during the second Sino-Japanese War for the nationalist Chinese govt. is 13.3 billion USD. So the ratio is 10: 1, 10 is the loss of the Sino-Japanese war, 1 is the loss due to the looting of the Soviets.

Good morning Boomerang 1996,

Yes, I've heard of this.

The situation in Manchuria was much more of a "mess" during 1945-1946.

On 14 Aug 45, Chiang's ROC government and the Soviet government signed the Sino-Soviet Friendship and Alliance Pact with attached agreements on the port of Lushun and the Dalian Railroad. The Pact placed Soviet civilian personnel in the area.

It wasn't until 1 Nov 48 that Chairman Mao's PLA obtained control of Mukden. For AHF readers, Boomerrang's post uses the new name for Mukden: Shenyang.

There's no question that Soviet forces drained much property from Manchuria.

Warm regards,

Bob

Foot Note: Believe it was 1946 when Mao's army had name change from Red Army to People's Liberation Army.

The principle of "reparations in kind" was promulgated in the Potsdam declaration of 1945 to which Japan de facto acceded when capitulating. The propensity of Chinese comrades to treat Japanese property in Manchuria as belonging to China is understandable but legally is not entirely valid.
