Poland 1939 - KIA Soviet officers

Post by Piotr Kapuscinski » 29 Mar 2009, 19:15

Some of the high ranking Soviet officers KIA in Poland in 1939:

On 30.09.1939 during the battle of Milanów and Parczew one of battalion commanders from 143. Rifle Division was KIA - which one? What was his name?

During the battle of Wilno three Soviet older officers were KIA - what were their names?

During the battle of Szack colonel Russijanow - commander of 52. Rifle Division - was heavily wounded. During the same battle 411. tank battalion under command of captain Nieseniuk was completely destroyed (lost all of its tanks knocked out or destroyed).

During the battle of Grodno according to Soviet sources many officers were KIA (as Polish sharpshooters were firing from hiding to officer targets).

On 21.09.1939 Soviet 13. Rifle Corps lost 1 older officer KIA.

During the battle of Borowicze - Nawoz - Huziatyn against Polish 3. KOP Regiment of colonel Zajaczkowski on 21.09.1939 - 22.09.1939 Soviet 87. Rifle Division suffered enormous casualties - even according to official Soviet sources losses of only some of its units were:

- 16. Rifle Regiment - 155 KIA, 75 MIA, 221 WIA - certainly some officers were among those KIA and MIA
- mechanized company from 43. Reconnaissance Battalion (casualties on 20.09.1939) - 29 KIA (only 11 soldiers and officers from this company survived)

Soviet casualties recorded in period 17.09.1939 - 30.09.1939 according to Krivosheev:

1. KIA + MIA (reported dead) + DoW = 150 officers / 209 NCOs / 1138 privates = 1475
2. Hospitalized WIA = 212 officers / 309 NCOs / 1862 privates = 2383

1 + 2 = 362 officers / 518 NCOs / 3000 privates = 3880

Very high percent of officer casualties and so "round" number of privates are strange and suspicious.

I've found some inaccuracies in his data (e.g. sums of losses of each type are higher than "total losses" given below).

Above I provided the sum of losses of each type (3880), and "total losses" given by Krivosheev are lower than the sum of losses of each type - 3858, not 3880.

Is there any breakdown of these casualties for each division and brigade?

It seems that the highest losses were suffered by 87. Rifle Division (at least 230 dead and 221 wounded).

I am interested in data on casualties of all Soviet units but especcialy in what were casualties of 34. Cavalry Division according to Soviet estimations, as well as Soviet losses during the battles of Dzwola and Krukienice.

More correctly (edition of 2001):
Commanders - 109 killed in action, 15 died of wounds, 18 killed in accidents, 6 missing in action, 186 wounded, 26 sick. Total 148 irrevocable, 212 sanitary, in all 360
NCOs - 141 killed in action, 18 died of wounds, 14 killed in accidents, 16 missing in action, 2 died of diseases, 298 wounded in action, 11 sick. Total 191 irrevocable, 309 sanitary, in all 500
Privates - 723 killed in action, 69 dided of wounds, 44 killed in accidents, 280 missing in action, 20 dided of diseases, 1518 wounded, 344 sick. Total 1 136 irrevocable, 1 862 sanitary, in all 2 998.
I'm not sure what "missing" category stands for and whether missing figures were later corrected. I wouldn't say that the proportaion of officers' losses is too high. It is about 10% of the irrevocable losses, and 9% of the total while according to the same Krivosheev's book out of 467 thousand men of the Ukrainian and Belorussian Fronts 62 thousand or 13% were commanders.

Do you know what % of the officers losses were political officers?!

Do you have any breakdown of these figures for each unit, Art?

I would like to compare them with some numbers from RGWA archive.
When you sum up number of privates on your own, it gives 3000 - not 2998.

When you read the number of privates given by Krivosheev - it is 2998:

http://www.soldat.ru/doc/casualties/boo ... er4_7.html

Similar thing with NCOs and officers:

Summed up NCOs = 518
"total NCOs" = 500

Summed up officers = 362
"total officers" = 360

Quite a lot of errors...

I checked the sum with a calculator, everything seems to be ok. Do you have exactly the same numbers as I quoted?
I haven't seen any distribution by units.

Hi Art,
Art wrote:I checked the sum with a calculator, everything seems to be ok. Do you have exactly the same numbers as I quoted?

I checked this data once again and indeed - everything is ok. Sorry then for my mistake! Probably I made a mistake while rewriting these numbers from his book to my notes.

But - anyway - Krivosheev's data is very incomplete because it does not cover casualties during the whole campaign. Also there are some serious discrepancies between Krivosheev's data and another Russian data - "Grif siekretnosti sniat" - which also does not cover casualties during the whole campaign (last Soviet combat actions in Poland - so also last combat casualties - were reported as late as on 14.10.1939).

"Grif siekretnosti sniat. Potieri wooruzenych sil SSSR w wojnach, bojewych diejstwijach i wojennych konfliktach. Statisticzeskoje issledfowanije", Woj. Izd., published in Moscow, 1993 - provides different (a bit bigger) numbers than Krivosheev, despite the fact that it covers only losses until 25.09.39 and without soldiers who died of wounds.

"Grif siekretnosti sniat" provides the following numbers for casualties in period 17.09.1939 - 25.09.1939:

- Ground Forces - 1447 killed by direct enemy action (KIA & MIA - died of wounds and non-combat losses not included)
- Air Forces - 8 killed by direct enemy action (as above - DoW and non combat fatal casualties are not included)
- Border Guard - 30 killed by direct enemy action (as above)

So even "Grif siekretnosti sniat" is still very incomplete - but it admits that it is incomplete. It provides a breakdown of losses of different branches of Armed Forces. For example it says that Armoured Forces lost 52 KIA, 3 MIA and 81 WIA (but it underlines, that these are not complete casualties). This is of course only for the period 17.09.1939 - 25.09.1939 and without those who died of wounds - as I wrote above.

And according to the report (written on 04.10.1939) on casualties and condition of Soviet armoured forces in Poland in period 17 IX - 2 IX 1939 losses were as follows (the following numbers were reported in this report):

KIA / MIA / WIA / Tank casualties / Including tanks completely destroyed or burnt out (irretrievable losses):

In brackets - number of operational tanks on 17.09.1939 / 02.10.1939:

Belarussian Front:

25 Tank Brigade - 0 / 0 / 0 / 45 / 4 (250 / 205)
22 Tank Brigade - 0 / 0 / 0 / 30 / 2 (240 / 210)
6 Tank Brigade - 1 / 0 / 3 / 48 / 3 (252 / 204)
2 Tank Brigade - 21 / 0 / 33 / 17 / 4 (240 / 223)
27 Tank Brigade - 20 / 18 / 26 / 30 / 4 (234 / 204)
20 Motorized Brigade - 3 / 0 / 22 / 2 / 2 (54 / 52)
21 Tank Brigade - 1 / 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 (105 / 105)
29 Tank Brigade - 3 / 0 / 1 / 65 / 3 (240 / 175)
32 Tank Brigade - 5* / 0 / 0 / 65 / 4 (250 / 185)

Total: 54 / 18 / 85 / 302 / 26 (1865 / 1563)

*While according to the chef of headquarters of this brigade (major Bolotow), 6 soldiers of this brigade were KIA (one commander of a platoon, 2 commanders of tanks, 1 mechanic - driver and 2 tank gunners) and 3 more were WIA.

Ukrainian Front:

36 Tank Brigade - 4 / 0 / 4 / 20 / 0 (220 / 200)
24 Tank Brigade - 7 / 0 / 16 / 42 / 2 (237 / 195)
38 Tank Brigade - 6 / 0 / 5 / 56 / 0 (145 / 89)
10 Tank Brigade - 1 / 0 / 9 / 0 / 0 (152 / 152)
25 Tank Corps - 7 / 0 / 24 / 15 / 12 (449 / 434)
26 Tank Brigade - 8 / 0 / 9 / 36 / 2 (246 / 210)
23 Tank Brigade - 3 / 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 (228 / 228)

Total**: 36 / 0 / 67 / 169 / 16 (1677 / 1508)

Both fronts in total: 90 / 18 / 152 / 471 / 42 (3542 / 3071)

**And according to the report of kombrig J. N. Fiedorenko (unfortunately the date is not given), casualties of armored forces of Ukrainian Front (without casualties of tank battalions and tank regiments) = 40 KIA, 74 WIA (so even more).

But as you can see even this report does not count casualties of all armoured units (for example - also Cavalry Divisions and some infantry units had got armoured elements - and they are not included here).

But even these numbers should be verified, basing on combat reports from individual battles as well as Polish sources.

For example:
2 Tank Brigade - 21 / 0 / 33 / 17 / 4
According to the combat report written by maj. Czuwakin (RGWA, 35086-1-233, k. 15-16), the Separated Unit of maj. Czuwakin (part of 2 Tank Brig.) lost 4 tanks completely destroyed and 11 KIA + 14 WIA during the battle of Kodziowce.

Poles reported eliminating / knocking out a total of 22 Soviet tanks and armoured cars during the battle of Kodziowce.

It suggests, that 2 Tank Brigade suffered almost all of its tanks casualties suffered in Poland in the period 17.09.1939 - 02.10.1939 (17 tanks - including 4 completely destroyed) during the battle of Kodziowce.

Of course if this data (17 tanks lost by 2 Tank Brigade - including 4 completely destroyed) is complete.

Best regards,
Peter

By the way - very "interesting" casualties:
And according to the report (written on 04.10.1939) on casualties and condition of Soviet armoured forces in Poland in period 17 IX - 2 IX 1939 losses were as follows (the following numbers were reported in this report):

KIA / MIA / WIA / Tank casualties / Including tanks completely destroyed or burnt out (irretrievable losses):

In brackets - number of operational tanks on 17.09.1939 / 02.10.1939:

[...]

36 Tank Brigade - 4 / 0 / 4 / 20 / 0 (220 / 200)
Concerning this (quotation from "The Red Blitzkrieg" by Maksym Kolomijec and Janusz Magnuski):
As "Diary of combat operations of Ukrainian Front" provides on 25.09.1939: "36 Tank Brigade, which was ordered to capture Chelm, until the evening hours was involved in heavy combats along the line: Wojsławice - Wólka Leszczyńska. Independent tank battalions and reconnaissance battalions of 2 divisons were send to rescue this brigade".
And this (several quotations from the Polish historian, Czesław Grzelak's book about combats in and near Chelm):
"When approaching to the military barracks tanks were fired at by small arms, MG and artillery fire. They retreated but due to barricades on the streets only one managed to break through to the eastern part of the city, where Polish soldiers were being disarmed. One of Polish units refused to be disarmed and opened fire. Soviet sources say about the death of their two officers. It is not known what happened to these encircled Soviet tanks."
After this incident Soviets retreated all of their units from the city of Chelm. Czeslaw Grzelak writes:
"After this failed attempt of capturing Chelm and disarming Polish soldiers, heavy combats started in the outskirts of the city, which later transmitted to nearby forests."

"Commander of 36 Tank Brigade decided to encircle the city and attack it with use of two tank battalions (I and III) and one reconnaissance battalion. Nothing is mentioned about the II battalion, which tried to capture Chelm previously."

Although the report of the commander of 36 Tank Brigade does not say anything about it, but according to the combat diary of KSOW, combat situation of the brigade in the region of Chelm was so hard, that tank battalions and reconnaissance battalions of two rifle divisions (44 and 87) were send to rescue the brigade."
And this (several fragments from the report of the commander of this 36 Tank Brigade - kombrig N. Bogomolow):
"At 23:00 reconnaissance group of the brigade (infantry platoon, 2 tanks, 3 armoured cars) which was near the locality Wierba was attacked by foot and horse soldiers. As the result of this combat around 50 Polish were killed; casualties of the reconnaissance group - 2 killed, 1 wounded."

"Disarming of the garrison of Wlodzimierz Wolynski ended at 20:00. 1500 officers and 12,000 soldiers were captured, 150 cannons were captured. Own casualties: 2 killed, 5 wounded, one armoured car BA-10 destroyed."

"The battle started, as the result of which until 17:30 Chelm was captured; in the city around 8000 officers and privates were captured, 20 MGs and 10 cannons were captured. During combat 2 officers of the brigade were killed."
So even if basing on the report of the commander - who, if expressing it in the most polite way - "forgets about some inconvenient facts" - casualties of the brigade only from these three combats are higher than casualties of the brigade during the whole campaign according to the official report written on 04.10.1939.

Not even mentioning that according to some other Soviet report 36 Tank Brigade had got 301 - not 220 - tanks on 17.09.1939. Apart from these 301 tanks also 24 armoured cars.

And this is "interesting" too:

About the whole campaign:
"Total casualties inflicted by the Corps to the enemy: killed were 78 officers, 133 NCOs, 2337 privates. Captured were: 322 officers, 30 NCOs and 352 soldiers. Captured equipment were: 814 rifles, 153 MGs, 1 mortar, 2 cannons, 15 cars.

Commander of 15. Tank Corps, komdiw M. P. Pietrow"
And now the same komdiw M. P. Pietrow about only part of the campaign (the battle of Grodno):
"Killed were: 320 officers, 20 NCOs and 194 privates. Captured were: 38 officers, 20 NCOs, 1477 privates. Loot was: 514 rifles, 146 MGs, 1 mortar, 1 AA gun"
Respect.

Respect to Pietrow for his mathematics abilities (even bigger respect for his great imagination) !!! 8-)

All of these facts tell us something about "reliability" of Soviet "official reports" from the "Great and Splendid Liberation of Persecuted Working People of the Western Belarus and Western Ukraine". :D

Every Soviet "report" (other name for "report" = "memories" of commander accepted as "official data" or even falsified to a bigger extent ) is providing different numbers. Try to guess why!

We Poles know something about it - our "6,000,000" of victims of the Second World War was also invented by some communist idiot (according to the most recent researches).

Hi Art!,
"Grif sekretnosti" is the same source as Krivosheev, or to be pedantic it's the first edition of the book, while the one I quoted from is the second one.
So probably that's why there are some differences in numbers.
24 Tank Brigade - 7 / 0 / 16 / 42 / 2 (237 / 195)
And according to the report of the commander of this brigade, its casualties were:

Completely destroyed AFVs - 2 BT-7 tanks and 2 BA-10 armoured cars
Men casualties inflicted by enemy fire (enemy = who? - only Poles?): 8 KIA / 5 MIA / 17 WIA

This brigade had got a combat against both Polish and German forces near Lemberg on 19.09.1939 (Germans were attacking Poles and mistakenly though that tanks of this brigade were Polish tanks, while at the same time Poles were also fireing at these tanks) - brigade reported 3 KIA, 4 WIA, 2 BA-10 burnt out and 1 tank damaged.

According to the report of captain Aleksander Wasilewicz Jegorow about this combat, Germans lost:
"two batteries of artillery, several dozens of German soldiers were killed"
While Germans reported their casualties during that combat against Soviet unit as 3 KIA, 9 WIA and 3 AT guns.

-----------------------------------------------
But as you can see even this report does not count casualties of all armoured units (for example - also Cavalry Divisions and some infantry units had got armoured elements - and they are not included here).
Here more data from "The Red Blitzkrieg":

Tank battalions in Rifle Divisions:

312 (44 RD) - no data available
322 (99 RD) - no data available
377 (97 RD) - no data available
347 (58 RD) - no data available

394 (60 RD) - in combats on 21.09 one knocked out and one burnt out T-37 (commander was KIA). On 22.09 one T-37 destroyed by automatic gun 20mm (during combats near Nawoz - Borowicze near Chelm).

Battalion from 45 RD - near Wytyczno (near Chelm) one T-37 knocked out and commander of a tank company KIA

Tank regiments in Cavalry Divisions:

44 (3 CD) - no casualties. POWs captured: 1 general, 670 officers, 2866 privates. Loot: 2 tanks.
32 (5 CD) - no casualties in equipment
39 (16 CD) - did not fight any combats
42 (4 Cavalry Corps) - 3 BT-2 tanks and one armoured car knocked out
25 Tank Corps- 7 / 0 / 24 / 15 / 12 (449 / 434)
According to its commander - general I. O. Jarkin - 8 KIA and 24 WIA.
38 Tank Brigade - 6 / 0 / 5 / 56 / 0 (145 / 89)
According to its commander - kombrig P. W. Wołoch - 8 KIA and 6 WIA.

-----------------------------------

Another problem is that these Tank Brigades mentioned above are not all tank brigades which were involved in combats in Poland in 1939 - because apart from Ukrainian Front and Belorussian Front there were also units of High Command's Reserves - including some Tank Brigades. If you know Polish a bit Art, you can read this - it is interesting:

Scan from "The Red Blitzkrieg" by Magnuski and Kolomijec:

There are some sources provided (in Russian), so even if you don't speak Polish at all, please take a look:

Image

According to this website:

http://berezynabogdan.webpark.pl/

http://www.dws.org.pl/viewtopic.php?f=5 ... 3#p1379173

There were the following Tank Brigades of High Command's Reserves (and others) involved in Poland in 1939:

39, 20, 16, 14 - and maybe also some others

Commander of 39 Tank Brigade confirms that his brigade was fighting in Poland in 1939 (see the scan above) - but it was neither part of Ukrainian Front, nor part of Belorussian Front - it was part of High Command's Reserves.

Also member of 16 Tank Brigade confirms that his brigade was operating in Poland in September and October of 1939.

Exact operations of these Tank Brigades in Poland are still - at least big part - not known today.

-------------------------

Btw - Art - I have one question.

Do you know if there are any cemeteries where Soviet soldiers KIA in Poland in 1939 are buried ???

According to my countings (basing on sources given above + some new, mainly from RGWA) casualties were at least:

"-" = no data
"+" = at least

-----------------------------------------

To sum up - these casualties (for the period 17.09.1939 - 02.10.1939 - and only casualties of Tank Brigades) are much higher than those given than Krivosheev (both in soldiers and in equipment).

Also it should be underlined, that casualties of other branches of RKKA were also much higher.

For example - according to "Grif siekretnosti" Soviet cavalry suffered the following casualties in Poland in period 17.09.1939 - 25.09.1939 (without soldiers who died of wounds and without soldiers MIA):

- 28 KIA, 22 WIA

And it should be noted, that the biggest battle of Soviet cavalry in Poland - the two days long battle of Krukienice fought against 3,000 men strong Polish Cavalry Group under command of general Anders - took place on 26th and 27th of September. Casualties of Soviet cavalry in that battle had to be at least several dozen men KIA or bigger.

According to Krivosheev casualties of Ukrainian Front until 30th / 25th of September were 1360 wounded soldiers.

Whereas only the Kievian Military Hospital alone took in at least 1610 wounded in Poland soldiers of RKKA. I don't know what is your opinion, but I think that only seriously wounded were being transported to this central hospital of the Ukrainian Front, while lighter wounded were being treated in field hospitals or smaller local hospitals.

This indicates that the total number of wounded soldiers was at least twice that high (as usually seriously wounded constitute only around 50% or less of all wounded soldiers).

Source for this number (1610) is:

Protocol from the conference of the War Council of KSOW from 26.11.1939.

---------------------------------------------------

Ukrainian Front also lost (according to Russian sources):

5 destroyed and 11 damaged in combat artillery guns
220 destroyed or damaged in combat motor vehicles (armoured vehicles are not included here)
