Sbornik materialov po izucheniiu opyta voiny

Any one know if the 26 volumes of "Sbornik materialov po izucheniiu opyta voiny" is on the net. I did a search and didn't come any farther than Eastview's offering them at $90 a volume. They are referred to a lot in Glantz', "Forgotten Battles" series.

I'm interested in Russian sources sources dealing with the period July 43 - June 44 if any one can suggest some decent books. In English this portion of the war is still poorly covered and then only from the German perspective. A few books covering Operation Kutuzov from either perspective would be especially appreciated, because I haven't found any the deal with it in any detail.

I've got scanned Svornik No. 18 (operation Bagration), so if someone is interested, write a PM to me.
As far as I know D.Glantz translated and published Sbornik No.18:
http://www.amazon.com/Belorussia-1944-S ... 0415351162
No.11 (Defense of the Kursk place d'armes):
http://www.amazon.com/Battle-Kursk-1943 ... 0714649333
Some parts of the Sbornik No.14 (Korsun cauldron battles):
http://books.google.ru/books?id=4SX1itc ... CAYQ6AEwAA
and Sbornik No.22 (Lvov operation, summer 1944):
http://www.amazon.com/Battle-Lvov-July- ... gy_b_img_b
Other issues are available only through Eastview or libraries if you have an access to them.

It must be said that there is surprisingly little information on the Battle of Kursk in SMIOV. From what I can see only the Sobornik No.10 contained an article entitled "Breakthrough of enemy defense on the flank of the Orel grouping", which was apparently devoted to the action of the West Front in operation "Kutuzov". Nothing else on this subject.
Ac concerns other literature dealing with this topic, there was a two volume account on the battle of Kursk published by the General Staff in 1941, it was published again several years ago:
http://shop.top-kniga.ru/books/item/in/271677/
It describes operation "Kutuzov" though with serious omissions, for example actions of the Central Front are virtually not covered at all.
There is some more modern material, of course, I can provide some advise, if needed.

I can add a personal note about the Glantz translations. The books were published by Frank Cass Ltd a UK publisher who also published the Journal of Slavic Military Studies (edited by Glantz). Frank Cass of course was of Jewish decent from Odessa and one of the leading smaller academic publishers of the eighties and nineties. The plan was to gradually translate most of the series starting with the most popular ones, Kursk Belorussia, Lvov and Korsun and to promote these through the various Russian and military studies journals.

However the early C21st was not kind to smaller publishers as the change in journal publishing (the profitable side of the business) to an internet based business destroyed their business model and meant costly investment in new technology (digital printing and digital production of journals). So Frank Cass was taken over by multinational publishers Taylor and Francis who took on the profitable bits and axed most of the rest (and the staff). So the publishing of the series was abandoned as I have not seen any new editions appear since Frank Cass was taken over almost ten years ago.

The series was always a difficult project as the reproduction of the maps was a nightmare and the text itself hardly deathless prose. However in their own way they were steady sales to be made form these titles and we often went to re-print with these titles.

Thx for the info, I will check my sources and see what titles sound most interest. What I am really interested in Soviet offensives from July 43 - December 43 and am looking for books on the Soviet side to counter balance Nipe's "Decision in the Ukraine" and Haupt's "Crucible of Combat". I do have Glantz' "Forgotten Battles" volume 5 and 6 but these don't cover all operations. In general the post Kursk (after the german offensive) and pre-Bagration period of the war is very poorly covered in english (and don't think it is that much better covered in german).

Jeff
One of the issues with the first series of Sbornik is that Eastview has them on microfiche. Is there a way to convert fiche to print or pdf or some other electronic format?

I was told there was a special piece of expensive equipment that did it. There are services that do the conversion for you.

An internet search came up with this:
http://digitisefilm.co.uk/index.html a UK based company that does the conversion for libraries and archives.
Reading the rest of the results tells me that using a desktop scanner is pretty useless since you need magnification or a very high dpi scan 2,000 dpi or higher in order to read the fiche.

Looking at the Eastview catalogue for the Sbornik 19 series, this is produced in pdf anyway and does not present the same problems.

The only problem with Eastview is the price.

Greetings!

It is possible to convert microfiche (and microfilm) to electronic images with a scanner. However, the scanner needs a back light. There are very few which do. The affordable ones for film require that you cut the film into strips, and then insert them into a slot on the scanner. OK for small home film, but not really an option for one's NARA collection. The only one I ever heard of the did microfiche is no longer on the market.

I know of several university libraries that allow you free use of their viewer/scanners to convert your microfiche/microfilm, sometimes limited in number if the machine is in demand. Commercial companies are waaaay too expensive if you want them to convert to collection to electronic files.

You could check ebay or such for a used microfiche scanner.

If anyone finds a scanner in production — in the normal price range of desktop scanners — that can handle microfiche/microfilm without having to chop up the film, please do let me know.

Cheers

As regards the price:
if we had a list of what people wanted then perhaps we could share the cost, or someone could use a library copy or we could get via a cheaper source (ie. a person who already owns the series.) I think the first step is to publish a list of the two series and see what people want.

The Worldcat listing https://www.worldcat.org/title/collecti ... ef_results

shows copies are held in Kansas and North Carolina.

I assume that if Art has not got a set that they are not available in Russia either except in the archives.

Leo,
It says that the miche is held on a disk CD-ROM? I will write and ask.

Some of these were retyped and are available on some servers. In Russian, so you have to search in Russian to find them...
