Just a couple of random related questions while I think about them -

What exactly is a самокат? Is it a pedal bicycle or a scooter/moped with an engine?

And what was the system for identifying Companies within Regiments and Battalions? Letter or numeric, and were the Regimental level Companies (Infantry Gun, SMG, etc) included in the sequence or skipped?

Thanks,

Gary

Here it is a usual bicycle. In modern Russian it's rather a kick scooter. Keep this in mind.

From what I remember within regiment 1-9 rifle companies, 1-3 machine gun companies, 1-3 mortar companies, SMG company (unnumbered). Accordingly 1st rifle battalion with 1-3rd rifle, 1st machine gun and 1st mortar company and so on.

Thanks Art, seems like every army had a slightly different way of designating its Regimental subunits.

I am working with the https://pamyat-naroda.ru documents for the 04/550 Rifle Division.
Under the headíng "Equipment, Personal Arms, and Transport", there are several abbreviations I have been able to guess [?], but others I cannot locate:
п — пистолет = pistol
б — бинокль = binoculars
к — карабин = carbine
а — ?
No. 1 — ?
No. 2 — ?
No. 3 — ?
No. 4 — ?
No. 5 — ?

I haven't seen these yet, but just in case, what are the abbreviations for machine guns: Light, Medium, Heavy, and Antiaircraft ?

Thanks, as usual.

I think (кр) is карабин - carbine, (k) is most likely компас - compass/busole.
I've seen somewhere (a) and (в) as being винтовка - rifle.

Top to bottom:
pistol
binoculars
compass
automatic rifle
SMG
птp - there is no such thing
carbine

Also you've missed "в" as винтовка = rifle and "с" as снайперская винтовка = sniper rifle.

As for numbered sets of equipment, I don't know their exact composition. Can only guess, that they differed from the standard infantry equipment by adding extra begs/pouches/bandoliers.

LMG - рп
MMG - сп
HMG - кп (was not officially used in the Red Army)
AAMG - зен. пул.

I see now. I was confused by your "Under the headíng "Equipment, Personal Arms, and Transport", there are several abbreviations I have been able to guess [?], but others I cannot locate:"

All the weapons abbreviations are explained in that first shtat that was linked to way back in the thread, for the July 1941 reduced strength Rifle Regiment. It's page 20 of that document, though rather hard to read. There's an Excel format version of the March 1942 Rifle Regiment over on RKKa.ru which can also be saved as word and run through translate -

Rifle with a bayonet (A, B) (I think latterly a refers to automatic and b to bolt action rifles?)
Sniper rifle with telescopic sight (c)
Carbines (cr)
Pistols and revolvers (n)
Submachine gun (pp)
Gun 26 mm signal (ie flare pistol)
7.62-mm machine gun hand "DP"
7.62-mm machine guns heavy machine "M" (I assume M is Maxim)
"Пулеметов 12,7-мм станковых на универсальном стан-
ке обр. 1938 г." - "Machine guns 12.7 mm heavy machine on the universal standard
ke mod. 1938 ' (I assume ke refers to a mount?)
Ружей 14,5-мм противотанковых - Gun 14.5 mm anti-tank (which I have seen abbreviated as птр)
Anti-aircraft machine-gun tripod
The sight of anti-aircraft machine gun
Шашек с гнездами (Ш) - sword with ???

Google translate struggles with the last two, it isn't 'chips with nests' or 'chips without nests' for sure. Шашек is a sword/sabre for the mounted platoon, but I don't know what's meant by гнезд?

I looked in my dictionary and Gnesd is translated as nest, Ami is the ending with the word C or with so I would guess scabbard or the like. Art may be able say to for sure
