Baltic submarine fleet time zone?

#1

Post by StefanSiverud » 24 Mar 2014, 14:50

I'm currently doing some research on WW2 wrecks in the south east Baltic and some of the non-Swedish ones are quite hard to find reliable information on, for instance S/S Baltenland (sunk 1941). This site: http://www.deepstorm.ru/DeepStorm.files ... Sh-323.htm appears to have the logs from each submarine and with the aid of Google Translate I might be able to use it as a complimentary source.

The time of attack is set to 22:51, but I assume this is not local time. I imagine the Soviet navy would use a standard time, probably based on Moscow, making the local time 19:51. Can anyone confirm?

22.51 is Moscow time. Local time (DSZ) - minus one, i.e. 21.51.

Local time would be Swedish time, i e GMT+1. Moscow time is GMT +4. Right?

Moscow time was GMT +3 back then, not +4.
Neither Sweden nor Soviet Union observed Daylight saving, so time difference was always 2 hours.

Please note that Germany and several occupied/allied countries reintroduced Daylight saving in 1940 or 1941... so e.g. in Summer 1941 Sweden was 1 hour behind France or Norway, in the same time zone as Spain and Portugal, which seems strange...

Well i forgot that Baltenland sunk near Sweden, not Germany. So can't say about local time. I know only that 22.51 is Moscow time and german sommer time differed from MT as -1 hour. So B. was sunk at 21.51 for germans.

Thanks for the replies! I think I have better try to find some more Swedish and perhaps German sources as well just to be sure. In the end, the exact time is probably not very important and it looks like I will be left with several others that are approximate or unreliable.
