Red Army Unit and Rank Structure

Hello to you all

I was wondering when did the USSR do away with traditional unit/rank structures and replaced it with the system that existed by the time the USSR invaded Poland and when did it return back?

Plus can someone explain in detail how that system actually worked and its affect on combat readiness and performance?

What is nontraditional unit/rank structure exactly? Military ranks were introduced in 1935. By 1939 the rank system was pretty usual except that the term "general" was deliberately avoided and general ranks were reintroduced only the next year.
