Unfortunately, the tank situation in the Odessa Special Military district isn't in my area of expertise.. but I know this:

2 Mechanized Corps:

11 Tank Division

16 Tank Division

15 Motorized Division

18 Mechanized Corps:

44 Tank Division

47 Tank Division

218 Motorized Division
[/b]

I don't have specific figures on me at the moment, but 18 MC was indeed a significantly weaker unit than 2 MC.

Victor:

Earlier I posted some numbers on the amounts of T-28 tanks - those numbers were only for units in the Kiev Special Military district. No T-28 tanks were listed in the Odessa Military district which contained 2 MC and 18 MC. Sorry.. I misunderstood your original inquiry.

Thanks Qvist for the mopre precise numbers. Do you happen to know how many of these tanks were serviceable?

As for T-28s, I saw photos of some of these tanks captured by Romanian troops and I thought it may have been in the initial phase of operations in 1941, but as it seems that there weren't any of them in Bessarabia, probably it happened later, in the Ukraine. Was the T-28 still in use in 1942?

Yes, but not in the southern area of operations.. the tanks that remained saw combat on the Leningrad and Karelian fronts into 1944.

I'm 100% certain that the T-28s you're talking about were captured in 1941. If you're interested, I found equipment figures for 2 MC and 18 MC for July and August 1941.

Yes, the July figures interest me very much. Please post them.

Btw, this is the photo of the T-28 I was referring to. It was taken in the center of Bucharest on 4 April 1944, after the first US bombing raid that year. The photo is the Romanian version of Signal magazine.

Hello!
Here is what info I have.
There were total in RKKA (22 June, 1941) - 593 KV-1; 84 KV-2; 59 T-35; 1383 T-34; 481 T-28; 9665 T-26 all modifications, 594 BT-2; 6298 BT-5 + BT-7; 704 BT-7M; 2331 T-37; 1129 T-38; 233 T-40; 2376 T-27; 3258 BA-6 + BA-10; 1899 BA-20; ~ 300 B-3 (armored carrier).
As for T-28: total - 481, among them - 39 at repair and ammunition depots, 89 in Leningrad military district, 57 in Baltic special military district, 63 in West special military district, 215 in Kiev special military district and 10 in Volga military district.

Best regards, BIGpanzer

Hmm.. I haven't checked the figures for all the tanks yet but I noticed that the figure for T-34s is a bit high. By 22.6.41, the Red Army had received only 1226 T-34s -- of which, 967 tanks were allocated in the western military districts. Can you provide a more detailed breakup of the unit or district dislocation of these tanks that amounts to 1383 tanks?

Hi, VDV!
Well, in this case I am absolutely shure for every my word, because the info is from the archives.
So, on 22 June 1941 - 1383 T-34 total: 388 at the repair bases, factory and army depots, testing areas (I have also the info about the amount of T-34s at every repair base, depot and so on on 22 June 1941, but this will take a lot of time to write) + 8 in Leningrad Military District (MD) + 50 in Baltic MD + 266 in West Special MD + 561 in Kiev Special MD + 50 in Odessa MD + 5 in Moscow MD + 23 in Volga MD + 16 in Orel MD + 16 in Kharkov MD (total - 1383, please check :) )

I also have the info about the amount of all types of Soviet tanks in tank and mechanized divisions (22.06.1941), but, unfortunately, the info is not about all divisions.

Regards, BIGpanzer

Hi BIGpanzer:
Well, in this case I am absolutely shure for every my word, because the info is from the archives.
So, on 22 June 1941 - 1383 T-34 total: 388 at the repair bases, factory and army depots, testing areas (I have also the info about the amount of T-34s at every repair base, depot and so on on 22 June 1941, but this will take a lot of time to write) + 8 in Leningrad Military District (MD) + 50 in Baltic MD + 266 in West Special MD + 561 in Kiev Special MD + 50 in Odessa MD + 5 in Moscow MD + 23 in Volga MD + 16 in Orel MD + 16 in Kharkov MD (total - 1383, please check Smile )
All of my info is also from archival sources so I too am certain of the validity of the numbers I provide. Lets take for example the Kiev Special Military district since it had the most T-34s of any district. Your figure for T-34s in KSMD is 561 while I only came up with 487 for 22.6.41:

2 tanks - 43 TD / 19 MC

38 tanks - 10 TD / 15 MC

34 tanks - 37 TD / 15 MC

140 tanks - 8 TD / 4 MC

173 tanks - 32 TD / 4 MC

100 tanks - 12 TD / 8 MC

If we're both using data from archival sources, why is there a disparity in our figures? Some of your numbers I do agree with -- such as the number of T-34s in the Western Special military district -- my figure is also 266 tanks. I also agree for the Baltic Special military district -- 50 T-34s in 5 TD of 3 MC. So, as you can see, some of our figures coincide and some do not. :)

regards,
VDV

Victor:

I just dug up some info that indicates that on 30.7.41, 18 Mechanized Corps received 5 T-28 tanks from rear-area repair facilities. Accordingly, all of the tanks were lost by the end of August. It's possible that the photos you were talking about are showing some of these same tanks.

Yes, I believe that these are the tanks. During its campaign in the Ukraine, between 17 and 1 October 1941, the Romanian Cavalry Corps captured around 70 tanks. It is possible that it met the T-28s.
