[quote="PT Dockyard"][quote]Krestyanin (Крестьянин)
WWII Registration: UOGT
Builder: Kolomna Works
Can anyone provide length and beam of this ship?

Assuming this is the same ship, Lloyd gives dimensions in the register 284-3;43-1

Here is a photo of SKVORTSOV-STEPANOV as Castillo Maqueda:
I recently found a nice photo of SKVORTSOV-STEPANOV, berthed at the Greek port of Volos:

Hi everyone,

Can anybody point me to crew lists for the SS Donbass I (i.e. the one that was sunk by German Destroyer Z27 on 4th November 1942)?

I already have the list of the men and women who died on board the Donbass (but perhaps some of these died in the attacks on PQ17?), so I'd like to compare this with full crew lists.

The reason is that in the spy history literature, there's a longstanding claim that Arnold Deutsch (who ran Philby, Burgess and Maclean for a few years) was one of the people killed on the SS Donbass (as he battled heroically to save his fellow passengers etc etc). Of course, it's a bit of a tall story, and there must surely be actual data - crew lists, newspaper reports, etc - that would help to prove or disprove this notion.

Anything you can point me towards would be really great, thanks!

Cheers, Nick

Here is page about DONBASS and men on her board. http://polarpost.ru/forum/viewtopic.php ... %81#p34453
Link to the Rudnev's book show all crew of DONBASS, not only loss list. 44 men and women. On page i've gave there is list off military crew of ship (post named "Список военной команды танкера "Донбасс"). There is no trace of A. Deutsch, but i think even if he was there, he was outside of all lists because of secrecy.

Thanks, that's really helpful igorr, much appreciated! :-)

As to whether or not Deutsch was on board, it's a tricky question: but he wouldn't have been there during PQ-17, so we can almost certainly rule out anyone who appears on the Donbass crew list then. So that's why I'm cross-referencing them. :-)

A related question: do you know who of the Donbass's crew received medals?

I've only been to Russia once (in 1977), so my Russian is very rusty indeed. But I'll give it a go! Большое спасибо!

I have what I think is a citation that Sun Yixian (Sun Yat Sen), Jiang Jieshi (Chang Kai Shek) and possibly others, were passengers on the Russian Express, departing Hong Kong on August 10th, 1922 and arriving at Shanghai on August 14th. Can anyone confirm the existance of a ship with that name. Have no idea what it would have been called in Russian, or even if it was a Russian registered ship. On the other hand Sun did meet with a Comintern rep on August 25 in Shanghai.

White Russian forces were still in control of Russian merchant ship operations in the Pacific region in August 1922. The exodus from Vladivstok under Admiral Stark, and the subsequent takeover by the Soviets, took place in October.

Georgii, Oleg, Pamyat Lenina, Sishan and Yaroslavl were in operation in DobroFlot around that time. Aleut, Kishinev, Mogilev and Omsk were under US control and were being handed back to the White Russians.

I am unaware of any Russian ship with the name Русский Экспресс. No such ship appears in my Lloyd's Register for 1917-18 and none appears in teh Stark/Schell registers for ships added betweenb 1917 and 1922.

Many thanks MJ and happy new year. I found the Empress of Russia as being the Canadian Pacific Lines 16,810 ton built in Gladgow in 1912. Didn't realize that the US was involved with any of the pre war Russian fleet. Many thanks for your dedication and hard work.---You are my guru on all this.

BIGpanzer wrote:Quite interesting fates had three "Elpidifor"s which were captured by White forces during the Russian Civil war and moved at first to Constantinople, later to Tunisia Bizerta in November 1920.

"Elpidifor No. 410" [launched in 1917 in Nikolaev] - most probably, removed from service in 1924.

"Elpidifor No. 411" [launched in 1917 in Nikolaev] - it became "Thrace" in 1921 and "Thraki" in 1927. Greek cargo steamer "Thraki" was sunk by German aviation off Porto Helli 25.04.1941.

"Elpidifor No. 412" [launched in 1917 in Nikolaev] - it became "Mikra Assia" in 1923 and "Theodora" in 1924 [tanker]. Greek tanker "Theodora" was bombed by German aviation 22.04.1941 off Antikura [Gulf of Korinth] - captain and 12 crewmembers were killed, the ship was completelly burnt out because of petrol on board.

I am preparing a short article on the Elpidifor ships that sailed in Greece and I would like to verify if No.411 and No.412 actually reached Bizerta or if they were sold during their stay in Constantinople. Thanks!
