Soviet soldiers wearing helmets?

#1

I seem to recall that soviet soldiers preferred wearing the caps to helmets, or something along those lines. Is there any other reason that I see little to no helmet wearing?

Just out of curiosity I went through the photos which amounted through time showing ordinary Red Army soldiers; and the results don't back up your statement. The Soviet soldiers did wear helmets and on a large scale.

To be more clear, I see more non-helmet wearing soldiers compared to the number of soldiers not wearing them. I'm sure that helmets were indeed used on a large scale.

Just speculating, but is it possible that they took the helmets off when combat wasn't imminent? Seems like most of the ones I've seen where it appears that actual shooting is going on, they are wearing helmets. The ones where they just have caps on, they are usually moving up to the lines or engaged in some other relatively safe activity. There are exceptions.

I remember reading that Red Army soldiers at first disliked wearing helmets because they considered them 'girly'. Soldiers shouldn't care about being wounded in the head and just fight. I remember the vast majority of Russian soldiers in the Tsarist Army wore caps in combat, so maybe it was out of tradition too.
