Question - Early Black SS uniforms

Postby Brett1 on 07 Aug 2012 21:40

How do you distinguish the difference between an early SS-VT uniform and an early Allgemeine-SS Uniform? Also, did the Allgemeine SS keep the twisted Black/Aluminum cord until the end of the war?

Sorry if these might sound like stupid questions, Not really an expert here.

Thank you.

The SS-VT wore Sig runes in their right collar tab from the beginning, while the Allgemeine SS wore the regiment number.

The black/aluminium cord was used by other ranks until the end of the war, though very few wore the black uniform by then.

The black/aluminium cord was also used by Allgemeine SS officers in their early black uniforms.
Up SS-Hauptsturmführer rank and maybe until 1934.

Thanks guys!

So after the ending of the black uniform in the Allgemeine SS, 1942 I think, How could you tell the difference between a standard SS and Allgemeine? Was it still the Regiment Number, etc. Or was it the fact that they still had the twisted cord on their uniforms. And what material/colour did they transfer to anyways?

Thank again!

I don't know what you mean by "standard" SS as opposed to Allgemeine; the Allgemeine SS actually was the "standard" SS, the other branches being the Waffen-SS, the SD, and the Reichsführung-SS (the staff of the SS main offices). An A-SS member can generally always be recognized by the "political" shoulder cords (on any type of uniform) and a cuff title bearing either an Arabic numeral, a Roman numeral, or a region name in Gothic letters. I suggest you read Vol.1 of Mollo's Uniforms of the SS, which deals with Allgemeine SS insignia in great depth.
