SS-VT´s training cap

#1

Post by Arto O » 17 Dec 2014, 02:25

Hi,
At some time SS-Verfugungstruppe used a shapeless and visorless cap during field training in order to protect the black uniform. From where they came from and what happened to them? Surplus of some other uniform in which SS insignia was added? Later they just dissapeared. In fact this photo with another in the same book are the only ones I have seen them in wear.
Thanks
Arto

Seems to me that those are WWI or post WWI hats.

At least those men are looking very hungry with their bowls in the hands.....

Thanks history1,
Yes, they look like WWI field caps. Maybe surplus from there. They seems to existed for very short of time.

First pattern SS field cap ( Krätzen ) was worn only by SS-Sonderkommando Zossen.

Below are 2 more photos showing the first pattern SS-Feldmutzen in wear. The second photo is LSSAH.

Still in use in September 1934 as we can see in the Riefenstahl's Triumph of the Will at 0:18:50.

Moth-eaten visor cap, eagle and skull placed seems fakes.

The cap may (or may not) be pre-war, it is a standard contract-made EM/NCO visor but that zinc Overhoff skull is a later addition. Clear photos, straight on of the insignia would be required to say 100% definitely though.
