#1

Post by will jones » 22 May 2015, 15:54

Just picked up this relatively untouched Luftschutz helmet , I'm no helmet guy but looks period to me , my question though is the absence of the decal/painted design to the front of the helmet ? , have a look at the pics guys and help a fellow collector in need , kind regards , Will.

Thanks Mark, and yes totally agree, unless absolutely necessary I never touch any of my stuff . I seem to recall a portrait photo of a feuerwehrmann wearing a gladiator style helmet? I recognised him as fire due to his double armed dress bayonet . as ever ,any further info greatly received ,
regards
Will.

Unusual M31 style leather liner..... other than checking that this is original to the helmet (seeing how it's "mounted", would have to be modified to work in a Luftschutz shell) - should be "professionally" done, not "stuck in" crudely by an unskilled hand....

Looks o.k. but just needs "a better look" .... also might "see" a faint shadow of the decal... a better "straight on/natural lighted" front on view (photo) might "confirm or not" whether one was there or not...

Luftschutz helmets were "used" long after the war as "Civil Defense" and "Factory Protection Services" helmets throughout "Eastern Europe" and Germany- (mostly stored for potential use....), with any "Nazi" emblems removed, of course....

I doubt this one is one of those... but that's one reason you see so many on E-Bay and why undecaled examples aren't the most desired examples...

Luftschutz medal is real, too bad it's broken... really only a "keepsake" as is...

Undecaled helmets could be used by many civil organizations, Luftschutz, Fire Service/Rescue Service, SHD, HJ, and even the military in the closeing weeks/months of the war... including Volksstrum units when nothing else was available...

Decent example... would all depend on the "cost" (if there was any?).. I'm not asking.. just saying...
Good hunting..

Thanks John , the liner is tight to the three pins, and to the internal pads, there are remnants of a much thicker chinstrap to both sides of the liner.
it feels and looks all tight and correct .it wasn't a lot of money just couldn't resist . thanks for looking .
P.S. here are a few more pics.

Personally... I'd give it a good "squirt" of WD-40 (metal only, of course), wipe it off... being an undecaled Luftschutz helmet, it's different than a "combat type".... won't hurt it, will clean it some, slowdown the rust, etc., and IMO won't do any long term damage. Wouldn't do the same to a regular helmet.
Can't help with the liner or strap, nothing will "bring them back"... at least they are still there. Leather liner appears original. If a good deal, how can you loose?
