STRANGE Helmet M40 - Flemish Volunteers !???
Hello!
Just received the French magazine 39/45 (by Heimdal). On the pages 86 - 96 is an article about latest items by Hermann Historica. On page 95 they publish 3 helmets and one of them is very strange and unusual!
It is an Waffen-SS M40 helmet for FLEMISH volunteers. It is stamped "8144" at the inside (back) and "EF64" at the inside (side). The chin strap is marked "Wallisch & Co - Wien 1942".
BUT... the SS-markings are at least STRANGE... On the LEFT helmet side (yes... LEFT hand side) is an SS-decal but REVERSED..... and on the right hand side is a yellow and black national symbol for the Flemish nation; the rampant lion, facing to the left.
At first I thought they reversed (mirrored) the photo by incident but in their description (in French) they also state that the SS-decal is on the left ('"SS" orienté à gauche et surtout, le lion de Flandre de la Légion flamande').
I mirrored the pic in photoshop ("SS" decal correct) but then the Flemish lion shield is reversed. Strange affair!
Pics (also my mirrored one) as attached. Any ideas?

very strange... tried to post the pics but they refuse to attach - even if I decreased their volume to about 400 kb. Strange, first time this happens here. Will try some later.

The Flemish Legion of the Waffen SS, never wore this decal on SS helmets.
They wear the flemish shield ( Black Lion of Flanders ) made in cloth, in several positions on the left arm ( SS-Freiwilligen-Legion
Flandern & later Langemarck ). Many helmets of these units even, are devoid of SS decals, as photographic evidence shows.
