Is this an original SS double decal helmet?
Re: Is this an original SS double decal helmet?
Sorry guys, I stand corrected. On this last photo it really seems to be "Hoffmann Rudi". What is a very common name. Didn´t note the first name in the other pic.
Sadly the grave search of the Volksbund brings up 188 casualties.

Dear Long lost Brother...kevint wrote:JohnG...you if you were my brother and with your passion, the Helmet would be sold to you!
Any how, I will put this thread to rest and appreciate all the help!!!
My willingness, (to go along) would have been full scale!
And this is the reason or LESSON, why any and all AMERICANS should be glad they live in the greatest country on Earth...the good old young USA.
Enough Politicking.
God Bless The US!!!
Any chance your old man was stationed at The Portsmouth Naval shipyard in early 1948.... (just kidding)...
Don't "lay this to rest" completely.... we now have a couple names to research... if there was a Thomas or a Rudi Hoffmann "around" the bunker would get "things rolling"... again, there should be a SS/SD connection with the name.
Also, let's see the Wound Badge if/when you get it...(Start a new thread- however).
Agree with your sentiments... with all our faults, still the "land of the free and home of the brave"... though most people rightly or wrongly feel the same way about their homeland and "beliefs" - which of course is natural.
Glad I could help....will keep searching on my end. Hope you still plan to "sit on" your helmet for awhile.. (keep it)...
Welcome home, "brother".... (as a fellow vet./nothing to do with helmet!)

Re: Is this an original SS double decal helmet?
JohnG...I thought about this for some time. I am going to put the helmet up for sale.
I wont go through any broker...and if I don't get my price...no big deal I don't need the money.
Any recommendations of sites with little or know fees?
Kevin

John,
I was wondering if this helmet was first owned by Rudi Hoffman........first owner....then by Cpl Thomas. Is there a way to check the SS Directory for a Hoffman.

Re: Is this an original SS double decal helmet?
The helmet would have been made 1934...seen duty in 1935...up till 1945.
Re: Is this an original SS double decal helmet?
Had a collector price the helmet at 5k. Said, they are pretty common.
Re: Is this an original SS double decal helmet?
Original SS/SD Double decal SD M34 helmets are very rare... fakes (many very convincing ones too!) abound on many dealer/auction sites, and the model 34 was produced well into the 1960s... as a fire/guard helmet.
As far as who it belonged to, as far as the names go... anything is possible. Helmet could have been picked up anywhere... story means little without evidence to back it up.
5K is nothing to sneeze at.... but would depend on the helmet that was sold... condition would make all the differance.

I paid for a very proximate author of German Helmets to authenticate...he viewed in person.
He id'ed Hoffman, Rudolf and Thomas.

He id' ed.....blood stains on the back of helmet...and cut chin straps.
Re: Is this an original SS double decal helmet?
I found a Rudulf Hoffmann in helmet...could this be:
Rudolf Hofmann (4 September 1895 – 13 April 1970) was a General of the Infantry in the Wehrmacht during World War II and a recipient of Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership

Re: Is this an original SS double decal helmet?
This helmet would have no connection to this guy (he's NOT SD!)... there are SD names that match, but no way of knowing which, if any, are correct... and that doesn't count the potentially 100s of EM/NCO SD men with the same names which could also be the original owner(s).kevint wrote:I found a Rudulf Hoffmann in helmet...could this be:

It is what it is.... the story and names are intangible..

I agree with John as when it comes to helmets It will be incredibly difficult to trace the names as there are so many possibilities however if you ever do sell it (which I personally wouldn't) you could sell it as an incredibly rare double decal SS/SD helmet with blood stains and the owners name carved into it as a back story which might add the the value.
