CORRECT SS-Helferin uniform?

#1

Post by 12thdivisionhelferin » 09 Sep 2011, 19:20

Cyberspace is confusing enough, though I've read many well written and fought after articles here. I am just getting into reenacting and need to find what i TRUELY need to wear for SS-Helferin (cuff title/hair/makeup/shoes/etc). I know no tie, but what else can you tell me? Also I'm going for the Helferin that's after the school, so no Reichschule-SS cuff title... is it true there's a Helferin-SS cuff title? (can i wear it??)

Any info would be great (please include referances if possible! Expecially on the cuff titles! As i need to show it to my Division Leader to OK it.) :milwink:

Also, do you think I could wear the hitlerjugend pin on the collar of my tunic? (I'm with the 12th division, but if i cant that's fine with me). Need to know by Rockford (Sept 23rd) but earlier the better so I can order things!!!!

My Regards,
Emaline

(yes that's my 'German' name..dont want to give out real First name)

Hello Emaline, and welcome to the Forum! :welcome:

For some information and photos to get you started, take a look at these topics in the Women in the Reich section.

SS Helferinnen, Why no tie? (especially from page 3 forward for photos): http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 7&t=112012

And although this thread contains a mix of Helferinnen from all branches of service,
Female Auxiliary Photographs: http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?f=77&t=66200

there are some shots of SS-Helferinnen in it, for example:

SS Helferin would not be assigned to a Waffen-SS division, they were trained in KL Ravensbrück to assist in guarding the concentration camps where female prisoners were kept as slave labourers, Ravensbrück itself, Auschwitz-Birkenau and Gross Rosen many were captured in Bergen Belsen where they had been evacuated to as their camps were liberated.

This is NOT about collecting Axis Uniforms,Headgear and Insignia and it is NOT something that needs to be re-enacted.

Ian, allow me to make a correction here. Your information refers to SS Aufseherinnen, while 12thdivisionhelferin is asking about SS-Helferinnen. There was a vast difference between the two in uniform, training, and duties. The former were, as you said, wardresses of female prisoners at concentration camps, while the latter were trained at the Reichsschule-SS in Oberenheim - not Ravensbrück - in Nachrichten skills, and served with that training in much the same clerical and signals capacities as Heer, Luftwaffe, and Kriegsmarine Helferinnen. The training, uniforms, and duties of SS-Helferinnen were laid out in - and distinguished from those of Kriegshelferinnen (which presumably included Aufseherinnen) - by an order from Himmler.

For a discussion of the difference, see, for example: http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 5#p1284565
and in the Axis Uniforms, Headgear and Insignia Forum: http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 1#p1379801

Hello AlifRafikKhan,

they're not SS auxiliaries but Organisation Todt signals auxiliares. We have a thread for those too http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 7&t=168323

With all respect, I presume you want to do this at public events. My advice is don't. I personally participated at an event years ago at The First Division Museum in Wheaton. One woman dressed as an SS auxillery created a firestorm of negative calls when her picture made the local paper. Regardless of what you may think you are, the public sees a concentration camp guard. And, you will not be able to explain that to everybody carrying a camera or seeing you from a distance. Such impressions are as inflammatory as somebody wearing an Allgemines SS uniform, and will likely not be welcomed.

i wish i knew about your HJ pin, but i am only starting to learn about this area as well (my neice plays ss helferin). as to the recommendation to not do this impression, my first thought is "well of course we wouldnt want to take an opportunity to educate anyone, after all, everyone knows that all ss females were death camp guards....and all ss men wore swastika armbands and committed crimes against humanity. i see it instead as an opportunity to educate the public. when we do an event, we we portray a headquarters unit, and we have some helferin in the hq that man our radios, telephones, and do typing. it makes for an really interesting display and we have had a very positive reaction.
