ww1 or ww2 helmet

Postby croatianknight on 27 Oct 2011 21:21

Hello. Im from Croatia. I got this german helmet as a souvenir when my parents went to visit my relatives in Hammerstein, Germany. Now can anybody tell me is this a ww1 or ww2 helmet. Some of my friend said that this is M18 helmet. And can anybody tell me which infantry did use and which paint should i use? Can anybody answer my question?

Hi, not a great pic but I think it is the earlier model, M16 and it is WWI. Not sure about the paint, most people re paint these in a geometric camo, but originally it would have been a grey green colour. Any German troops might have these, infantry, cavalry etc...

:welcome:

Take some better pictures using natural light....also show us the "insides", (the liner, etc. if it's still intact). It's definately a WW 1 helmet, German ones were issued in a "Feldgau" (Field Gray) (Gray/green) but Austrian WW 1 helmets were a much darker brown shade (which yours might be)....but need better photos....

Nice......don't do ANYTHING TO IT......at least until more experianced "eyes" have looked at it!

Cover it with a sac for straw and tie it with a thick wire. No need to paint, only covering is also good.

German M16/17 pattern "WW 1" helmet with original liner pins & metal liner band, only one liner "pad" remains...most of original paint lost to "age & wear"....however, still a decent example of an original helmet....YOU SHOULD NOT DO ANYTHING TO THIS HELMET....if you repaint it, it will LOSS 80% of it's present value!

These were "common" issue to all German troops (as supplies allowed) of all branches....including, of course...the Infantry.

I'd give it a lite WD-40 (oiling)...and then wipe it off....(not too much....not on any "leather" parts)....but don't touch the paint!

Value is very "subjective".....here in the states I'd say between $100.00 to $300.00 US.....the liner damage (missing pads) keep the value down....certianly a fine representative example of a plain feldgau painted WW 1 German helmet...
