Stahlhelm help
So I got an original Stahlhelm for €65 (or $74 if you're from the US) but I think it's weird. It has a brownish color and some scratches that makes it look almost a little red. the ventilation holes have pieces of metal over them.
Here are some pictures of it:
And here is a luftwaffe m40 model for comparison:

Re: Stahlhelm help
The "Brown helmet" is NOT a WW 2 period helmet... postwar made (rim line, air vents, extra holes), possibly one of the current "Chinese-made" replicas being marketed. A photo of the liner would help! The LW M40 is a nice original.

Re: Stahlhelm help
From what I've found out the liner is actually a modern day Fireman liner. If it is I would really like to change it. Anyway, here it is:

IMHO, Don't waste your time or money... it's a "look alike" only, not an original shell or paint... so what difference does the liner make? Put your money toward an original helmet!

Re: Stahlhelm help
Well I was told that it was an original shell that had been repainted early after the war and that the liner was changed.

Re: Stahlhelm help
If it's an original shell, it would have makers marks/shell size as well the "lot" number stamped into the shell. Even if it is, it's been reworked and has extra holes... any effort and any expense would be money wasted IMHO. If there are no shell markings, then it is a Chinese made replica... either way, an original is a piece of history (and an investment)... a repainted, relined, drilled helmet is little more than a toy (of NO real value)... of course, you're free to waste your money if you wish.

There's no reason for you to get an unwanted attitude here now is it?

Re: Stahlhelm help
They lied, John has told you the truth. The subject helmet is crap and not representative of any WWII German helmet..NewCollector wrote:Well I was told that it was an original shell that had been repainted early after the war and that the liner was changed.

Re: Stahlhelm help
No attitude intended.... you asked, I responded. If you are seriously interested in collecting, buy original items in original condition! .... even if the shell was real (it's NOT)... what would you have after you "restored" it.... it would still be a repainted, relined shell of NO collector value or interest. I'd rather have a "Luftschutz helmet" in fair condition than a "restored or fake" whatever in excellent condition.
I have 60 years of collecting experience, and have made my share of mistakes.... my only attitude is to promote smart collecting and help other collectors avoid making the same mistakes... no offense was or is intended.

Well I apologize for going on the defence. I am quite young and where I am from you have to be on the defence at all time and I just thought you were attacking me a bit.

Re: Stahlhelm help
I asked some other people about it and it would be logical if the helmet isn't even a German helmet. Countries like Spain, Finland and Norway were supplied with Stahlhelms from Germany. I bought it from someone in Finland which in that case explains it.
