Twin engine bombers in Palestine

#1

Post by stevebecker » 24 Apr 2014, 01:37

Mates,

I was wondering if any of these German twin engine bombers were sent to Turkey to suport there war effort?

Late in the war Germany had the Gotha types as well as the AEG and Friedrichshafen types in service in France, there use on long range sorties would be ideal for them?

Britian did send a HP type and was used by 1 Sqn AFC late in the war which proved sussesfull, so a German tpye would have also proved to be of some use.

But so far all my reading failed to find any of these types sent to Turkey?

Any ideas?

according to the Ottoman archives the following took place:
Consequently a re equipment scheme was drawn up and a request sent to Germany for approval of:
25 AEG C.IV with 2 Parabellum machine-guns each
15 sets of spare parts for the AEG's incl. 80 sets of tyres and 2 propellers for each aircraft.
4 of the latest type of infantry aircraft of latest AEG design.
6 AEG G.III twin engine bombers.
25 Albatros D.III 160 HP fighters.
15 sets of spare parts for Alb. D.III.
25 sets of C and G type accessories
25 " D-type "
12 sets of C-and G-type tools
6 " D-type "
15 sets of C-,D- and G-type engine spare parts and tools.
To introduce the new aircraft it was requested that the following German personnel be seconded:
6 pilots (3 fighter, 3 bomber)
6 observers/bombardiers
12 Mercedes engine mechanics
6 riggers for G type aircraft
2 carpenters " "
2 machine-gun mechanics for Parabellum MG's
4 photographers
6 wireless mechanics

This comprehensive shopping list, however, was not approved by the German High Command and only the 25 AEG C.IV's were delivered in November 1917 (plus 14 engine less spare airframes in August 1918). Instead of the Albatros D.III's a number of Halberstadt D.V's and Fokker D.I's were delivered. The G-type bombers were flatly refused.

Mates,

Thank you for the replys.

Its a shame that Germany never sent these types as a few bombers would have given the Turkish Army a great range to attack allied units and airfields during the night as they did with great sucess in France and Britian.

Cheers
