Re: German commanders in the Ottoman Army
Hi Elwyn,
nice image. Actually, I think they have the spelling correct: Bavarian Major Wilhelm Willmer. The young naval officer is Leutnant zur See Ernst Krieger and GFM Mackensen's adjutant is Major Kurt Krahmer. Hptm Erich Soldan also in the frame.
Regards

Re: German commanders in the Ottoman Army
Another interesting officer was Heinrich Eberbach a leading Panzer general in WWII and on the staff of the Turkish 8th Army in WWI.
I have always thought that if the Turks had entered WWII on the side of the Axis an officer like Eberbach would have been the ideal leader of German/Turkish armoured corps?

Re: German commanders in the Ottoman Army
Mehmet Selçuk writes forth:
"When Goltz came to Turkey he was 40 years old. He was send to Turkey as training officer by Kaiser Wilhelm II. In reality he looked like a Hodja or school teacher rather then an officer. He was huge, paunchy, hunchbacked and wearing glasses. He was a Prussian. But never looked like a Prussian. He was not sulky, harsh, stern and haugty. He was cheerfull, modest and fat
herly. Cevat Pasha and Şakir Pasha who went to wellcome him (at train station) was very surprised of his appearance. Goltz told them in Turkish " Merhaba Efendim, nasılsınız?" (Hello Sir How are you?) and continued in German "That's all. I am learning Turkish"
This huge Prussian was a good soldier.
He was one of the best strategists of Europa. He had 1001 new ideas in his mind. He had read all the books about Turks before he come to Turkey. Later he told to his close friends "As I read more about Turks I loved them. I think I am "Vertürkt"/Turcized.
As he was presented to HM Sultan Abdulhamit II he told thiim:
"I promise you HM that I shall work as an ordinary soldier among the lines of Turkish Army which has the best soldier of the world"
