The Argentinian born German aviator who served with the Ottoman Army in 1913,during the Balkan War.

He completed numerous long range reconnaissance flights over the Bulgarian lines and is credited with becoming "the first Turkish aviator to drop an aerial bomb in warfare".

Has anyone any information on this pilot?

His navigator Staff Captain Kemal Bey was not Mustafa Kemal (Ataturk). During the Balkan War he and his comrade Captain Salim Bey got orders to flew to Istanbul and to teach some new candidates. On the way they lost their way 15 degrees and flew over Sea of M.armara and landed on Bandirma on the Asian side.
They became the first Turkish airmen who flew over Sea of Marmara and landed on Bandirma on the Asian side safely and returned to Istanbul's Yesilkoy Airfield.
Kemal Bey was killed in Gallipoli.

As soon as I find more information I will post.

Mate,

I looked every where but could find little details on him, other then whats on this site?

Mario Scherff took part in flight competitions before the First World War, worked as a blade, flight instructor and acceptance fighter at the Fokker aircraft works. In April 1915 he crashed with his companion, Fritz Höngen, over the Ostorfer lake near Schwerin. Both were injured - Höngen died many years later of the consequences of this accident. Antony Fokker then terminates the employment relationship.
In the war followed jobs at different aircraft plants. He works as a flight instructor. Scherff's sister, Martita, later married the Alter Adler No. 162 Gerhard Sedlmayr ( 1897-1952 ) . After the war, Scherff did not have a chance to continue flying. He became a merchant and settled in Leipzig. There the 'Turkish Airman' died on July 13, 1958.
