Difficult to tell for sure, it could be the balloon or a rank star. The coloured stripe after it shows arm of service. This photo is interesting as it is the only one I have seen which seems to prove the use of khaki field caps by the Austrian army in Palestine. Nice view of the Tropenhelm too.

The dentistry looks painful, I wonder if that's a large bottle of wine on the table?

Cheers

My guess is that it is a rank star. The picture shows artillerists from one of the two mountain howitzer batteries of the "Gebirgshaubitzdivision von Marno" in Palestine. As far as I know, there were no Austrian balloon squadrons at all in Turkey in WWI.

Most possible they are aeroplane pilots. Note the Field Pilot's Badge on the right breast right above the Gallipoli Star. Initially it was introduced for all graduates of field pilot training, and after 1915 only to those pilots who could prove a minimum of 10 operational sorties:

Great photos, thank you for sharing.

The Austrian balloon badge was I think worn by all flyers (aeroplane pilots and observers and the balloon troops themselves), see http://www.austro-hungarian-army.co.uk/facings.htm

So the guys you say are from a balloon company might well be aeroplane pilots.

Hope that helps,

Cheers
