Galip Pasiner Pasha is a very interesting personality. I am trying to write a book about him since 6 years it is still not finished. Every stage of his military life is an adventure. We Turks say for such personalities "Hayati roman, or hayatı filim" ( His life is a novel or a movie) After he was takem POW he was semd to Cairo where he stayed in a villa during his imprisonment while other Turkish pashas were in prison camp. I say that it was the curtasy of his British Mason brothers to keep him in a villa near Cairo with another Turkish Free Mason Col Ahmet Bey Commander of 22nd Hicaz Div.

He was defending Taif only with 950 very old Mauser rifles and 5 very old Turkish made commen 7,5 cm mountain guns. . Most of the rifles were useless. The defence line was 6 kms. only 150 rifle men were able to defend a one km area. The bullets were also out of use. bulets only had a range 500 metres. On May 30, 332 (1916) at 09.45 800 Araps begun to attack. The fight continued 8 hours. At the beginning of July Arabs begun to use artillery and MGs.
At the middle of August Şerif Abdullah the rebel sheik send artillery major Sait Efendi to Galip Paşa for a honourable surrender talks.Sait Efendi was an Ottoman Officer from Bagdad deserted to British. in 1950's he will be famous as Prime minister Nuri Said Paşa of Irak. He will be killed by iraki mob of the nationalist revolition in irak in 1959. :)

At the beginning of September the syrian soldiers among the defenders also deserted.
Sir Ronald Storrs, The Momoirs of Sir Ronald Storrs, s.191 wrote that the syrians informed tham that the Turks suggested 30 000 egyptian soldiers supporting the arabs for that reason they surrended. The last day before the surrender Galip pashe gathered his men and asked them if they want to surrender. All wanted to surrender to British not Arabs.(Sir Ronald Storrs, s.191)
On Sept. 22/23 1916 Galip Pasha surrended to Sait Ali Pasha of Egpt.

Tosun,

My understanding is that;

Arabs forces surrounded Mecca and captured it around June 1916, but the Turkish garrison was near by at Taif and held out until Sept 1916 when it was surrendered.

Accounts I read mentioned the commander as Fakhreddin Pasha (Wavell) while others give Galip Pasha (Turkish accounts).

Can you give any other details on the fighting here like

What Turkish units held the Mecca area and surrendered with Galip Pasha?

I could find only one Turkish officer name Fakhreddin and he commanded the;

79th Infantry Regt - Fakhreddin Bey (27th Arab Div) in Syria

Cheers

Tosun,

Sorry my fault again with Turkish and English;

Fakhreddin Pasa could be Fahrettin (Türkkan) or Fahreddin Pasha commander HEF;

"On May 23, 1916, upon the orders of Cemal Paşa, Fahreddin Paşa moved to Medina with a group of officers. A few days later, the Arab Revolt broke out, when the sons of the Emir of Mecca, Sherif Hussein, raided the Turkish military stations. Fahreddin Paşa undertook the task of defending Medina and its holy sites against the rebelling Arabs and the British. He took over the command of the “Hejaz Expeditionary Force” on July 17, 1916, and organized the successful defense of the holy town. On May 14, 1917, being aware of the threat, he ordered all the holy relics in Medina, including some personal belongings of Prophet Muhammad, to be packaged and transferred to Istanbul on a special train.

When the armistice was signed on October 30, 1918, the legendary Hejaz Expeditionary Force was ordered to surrender. The “Desert Tiger” refused to comply and insisted to stay in Medina to protect the town. Finally, on January 10, 1919, his officers had to seize him by force, and handed him over to the British.

After a brief stay in Cairo, Fahreddin Paşa was sent to Malta as a prisoner of war. His captivity ended on April 30, 1921 and he was sent to the port of Taranto in Italy, from where he returned to the homeland.

On October 27, 1921, the Turkish Grand Assembly appointed Fahreddin Paşa as ambassador to Kabul, Afghanistan. He was very successful as a diplomat and he organised the Afghan support for the War of Independence in Turkey. He returned to Turkey in 1926 and became first a member, then the chairman of the Military Court Council. He retired in 1936. "

Of cause where does Galip Pasa fit in here and what did he surrender in Sept 1916?

128th Inf Regiment under command of Staff Maj. Hüseyin Hüsnü Bey ( LtGen Kılkış) was defending Holy city of Mecca. The men of the Regiment were native Turks of Mecca. 10 days before the arab rebellion Maj. Hüseyin Hüsnü Bey was taken with two battalions to Cidde. To reinforce the city Maj. Derviş Bey ( LtGen) was send to Mecca from Taif. Both Taif, Cidde and Mecca were defended by weak forces. Therefore they both callopsed. On the otherhand Medina defended by Fahrettin Pasha resited the enemy even after the armistrace

Tosun,

Thank you again.

Some British accounts say that two Turkish Regts surrendered with Galip Pasa, but you only mention the 128th Regt (above).

Was the 128th Regt the only Regt lost during this sad time.

Did Maj Huseyin Husnu (Kilkis) get captured around the same time with Galip Pasa?

What force did Maj Dervis Bey command?

Other accounts show units of the Hijaz Expeditionary Force, as 81st the 82nd & the 130th Brigades of the 22nd Div and later the 130th & the 42nd Brigade of the 14th Div

I have no idea of what these are as Bdes are not used in Turkish records?

There was no 42nd Brigade, but 42nd Infantry Regiment. I know that since my childhood. Because my late father commanded the regiment during the years 1950-53 at Gallipoli.
