I found a mention of Sureya Bey here. I am looking for information about this person, in particular I would like to know if he had a son.

Mates,

The caption reads these men were killed in Aug during the Romani battle, while I record there lost during the Katya battle well before that

My latest details now gives these men as;

3 Camel Formed July-Aug 1915 at Damascus

(3) Camel (Hecin) Regt Maj Mullmann (G)

? Co - Capt Sirri -
? Co - Capt Süreyya Bey KIA 23-4-16 battle of Katya in Sinai
2Co - Lt Halet KIA 23-4-16 battle of Katya in Sinai
Lt Yakup Robenson KIA 23-4-16 battle of Katya in Sinai

Thank you stevebecker for providing the correct spelling for Süreyya Bey. It should allow me further online research.

I read here http://goo.gl/D0QXfP
'Sureya Bey was killed during the Anzac Mounted attack on Katia, August 1916'

Mate,

Your right I saw that?

I am unsure how Terry got that information on these man, as all mentions seam to say they were lost during the great victory at Katya over the British Yeomanry.

Purhaps others may have better details

My details on the Camel units has been hard to firm up, as by what name were each unit/Regt known?

This so far is what I can find?

1st Camel (Hecin) Regt - Formed Jan/Feb 1915 -Sinai (1st Exp Force) to Baghdad Iraq Sept 1915
LtCol Sadik (1915) & Josef Bischoff (G) 1Co - Lt Suphi Nuri (ileri)

2nd Camel (Hecin) Regt - Formed June 1915 - to Baghdad Iraq Nov 1915 to Medina (date unknown) possibly known as Camel Raider Bn
Maj Mehmet Atif Bey (Atesdagli) & Ali Pasha

(3) Camel (Hecin) Regt - Formed July-Aug 1915 at Damascus possibly known as the Medine Camel Raider Regt (Medine Hecinsuvar Alayi)
Co Com - Capt Sirri - Capt Süreyya Bey KIA 23-4-16 battle of Katya in Sinai 2Co - Lt Halet KIA 23-4-16 battle of Katya in Sinai Lt Yakup Robenson KIA 23-4-16 battle of Katya in Sinai

I did find a reference to this man;

Mehmet Atif Bey (Atesdagli) Capt to Maj to LtCol
Baghdad Gendarmerie Command & Nablus Gendarmerie Battalion & (6th) Camel (Hecin) Regt & 2nd Provisional (Composite) Force
born 1876; Crete - died December 3 1947; Istanbul) graduated 1899 1314-Sv. Cavalry 48 Balkan War to Maj 1916 to LtCol 1917 & War of Independance

So far I can find no mention anywhere about a 6th Camel Regt? the only mention I have for him was in the 2nd Camel Regt?

Cheers

Mates,

In reading the BOWH for the fighting in Mesopotamia there is a mention of two Camel Regts being used in the 6th Army;

Reports of the 6th Army

at battle of Ctesiphon 22-11-15 British reports - Iraq Cav Bde (400 men) 2x Camel Regts 52 guns and 18,000 men

Who are these two Camel Regts which arrived outside Baghdad Oct Nov 1915?

Possibly the 1st and 2nd Camel Regts.

What is interesting another British report for the Hejez shows these Camel formations'

shown Dec 1916 British report - Medina 4/131st Regt + Gendamerie unit from Aleppo province (600 turks) 1/129th Regt (700 men) + 79th MG Co 4xMgs 3xCo's of engineers from 47th, 48th & 49th Div's + Camel Regt (500 men) - Bir Derwish district 1,2,3/55th Regt 2,3/42nd Regt 3/130th Regt + 2xCo's Mule Mounted Infantry + Camel Regt Shammar Arabs & Bty/22nd FAR - Bir Raha district 1,2/130th Regt (700 men) + Camel Regt (300 men) + 1xCo Mule Mounted Infantry - Mohafiz Alai 1xCo Camel Corps regt - 1xCo at Abu el-Naam and 1xCo at Bowat - El-Ula 1/42nd Regt + Ageyl camel corps (arabs) - El-Wejh 1Bn Jendames (800) + Ageyl camel corps (arabs).

So who was this or these Camel Regts?

Possibly the 2nd Camel Regt which was known to be sent to the Hejez/Medina from Mesopotamia, but as we don't know the dates its still not confirmed. which could be 800 men or two Regts of 500 men and 300 men?

What is also interesting is the mention of these two Arab Camel units

Camel Regt Shammar Arabs
Ageyl camel corps (arabs)

Cheers
