Re: Ottoman Navy in Palestine
Dear Mr Kruesmann,
According to the "The Turkish War; The Sinai - Palestine Front during the First World War; IV Vol. 1. Section, page 678" published by the Turkish General Staff Military History and Strategic Studies Directorate in 1979;
|| several slip ways, a dry-dock and repair facilities were constructed on the shores of the Dead Sea for a much faster method of transporting war materiel brought in from the rail heads of the Hijaz Railway. Furthermore, 5 motor boats and a multitude of barges were drop shipped to Jaffa (no doubt through the auspices of the German and Austro-Hungarian Navies) and transported on horse drawn long carriages all the way to the Lake. This operation commissioned as the "The Sea of Lût Maritime Transport Management"; began to move approximately 100 to 150 tons of food stuffs as well as ordnance on motor boat drawn barges by early 1916. After Jerusalem was lost by November, 1917 however; the whole operation as well as the personnel were transported to Lake Tiberias. ||
Unfortunately; the book does not mention any names or specific information on where these motor boats were built.
Best Regards, Osman Levend

Re: Ottoman Navy in Palestine
Mates,
The question was asked about the two Naval officers with Cemal in the 4th Army,
Thanks to another discussion Tosun (Kemal) has again given that answer.
Navy Lt's
Abdurrahman Bey &
Nusret Bey (killed by Armenian assassins at Tbilisi on 21 July 1922)
We now know both officers
But to how and why Naval offciers were attached to the Army in other areas we don't know.
Cheers
S.B

Re: Ottoman Navy in Palestine
Dear Steve, Ahmet Cemal Paşa commander of 4th Army was also Naval minister of Ottoman Empire. For that reason he had 2 naval officers as aides. cheers
