Hi

I've just found this thread and and very interested in the book. I wargame the second syrian war (1839) and am just trying to find out the uniforms for the Ottomand army in 1828 for the Russo-Turkish War. I very much look forward to the publication of the book.

I don't know whether anyone's seen the attached illustration painted by von Moltke (yes that one!) when he was an advisor to the Turks prior to the Battle of Nisib
Cheers

Here are three older Plates 19, 15, 27 that have been updated. The 'problem' is trying to pin-down the the actual uniform of the 1st Lancers/ Ertugrul Lancers as the troopers appear to wear the same uniform, whereas the Regimental staff for the Ertugrul wear green uniforms; while the Ertugrul troopers have the same uniform, and uniform insignia as the troopers in the 1st lancers. The oddity is that whereas the troopers and officers of the 1st Lancers as extensively illustrated over the 1861-1908 period; only the Ertugrul colonel in his green uniform was ever illustrated, and as well the insignia charts have the 1st Lancers/ Ertugrul Lancers listed as sharing the same insignia. The Zonaro painting (the only one ever made), depicting the Ertugrul Lancers, clearly shows the troopers wearing 1st Lancer uniforms, wearing white metal shoulder scales (the 1st lancers at the time had yellow ones), and different pattern saddle blankets). This has led to the conclusion, that the 1st Lancers/ Ertugrul Lancers were one in the same, with two regimental staffs, one of the 1st Lancers, and one for the Ertugrul, who were slowly raising the Ertugrul REGT. troopers via the 1st REGT. There is an '1895' photo of an NCO in the Ertugrul, who clearly wearing a uniform without the red lapels (as was worn by the 1st REGT. but not worn by the Regimental staff for the Ertugrul), and as this is one of the few photos of this unit possibly leads to the conclusion that at least a demonstration troops was fitted out in uniforms for the Ertugrul REGT. - recognizable by the extra-large 30mm white metal buttons worn by the Ertugrul. However, it is not known if this is blue or green. Post 1908, and clearly by 1914/15 only the 1st Lancers remain.

Nick, the uniforms for this period are those adopted in 1826, and used throughout the period till 1839. However, the Fez was not used till-after 1832. Here are the plates reorganized to help show this transition:
