I read in a biography of Ataturk ( Andrew Mango) that it was common to address Turkish generals as "pasha" even after the Republic was declared. Is that still common in the modern Turkish army?

Mate,

Interesting question.

I can't recall the officers being addressed as such when I was attached to the Turkish Bn in Bosnia a number of times during the Balkan War 1994 to 96.

My dealing with them and there soldiers they didn't address them as such, but then again I don't understand Turkish and may have missed it and since our dealings were in English, which the officers and some of the men knew or had a understanding off?

According to civil law dated 26/11/1934 and number 2590 which was published at the Official Newspaper on
29/11/1934 number 2867, Vol.3,p. 6. the tittles sucha as Ağa, Hacı, Hafız, Hoca, Molla, Efendi, Bey, Beyefendi, Paşa, Hanım, Hanımefendi and Hazretleri was demolished.

During ottoman period there were 2 pasha tittles: a civilian pasha, military pasha
After 1934 the military pasha was called General. civil burocrats never tittled as pasha again. But according to 1000 years of long tradition people used to say the above mentioned tittles in their private conversations. eg. the goverrnors was named as "Vali Paşa" People used to call army generals and admirals as pasha. Eg. My late mother used to call her husband my father "My Paşa" although he was a graduate of 1924 and one of the first officers of the republic. Today I also call my old military commanders who are long in retirement "My Paşa"
We still say Effendi, Aga, Hoca ect in our private conversations but not officially.

low ranking COs, NCOs and soldiers adress their commanding officers " Komutanım" (My commander) They never call Yüzbaşım (My Captain) Binbaşım (My Major) Genaralim, (My General) only they adress "Komutanım"

If someone wants to adress another officer from another company of reğiment he adresses Yüzbaşım (My Captain) Binbaşım (My Major)

If someone writes a letter to an officers he adresses " Yüzbaşı Tosun Saral" (Captain Tosun Saral

I'm happy to hear that some Ottoman traditions survive, even if only informally.
