English translation for Der treue Feld soldat

Postby D.Verfasser on 01 Nov 2009 00:37

Could someone translate the lyrics to this song?

1. In dem stillen Tale
im verträumten Grund,
Küßt ich viele Male
Deinen roten Mund.
|: Und wo im Tal die Linde steht,
Dort sag ich dir auf Wiedersehn;
Ich hab dich ja so lieb.
2. Tausend kleine Sterne
Grüßen dich von mir.
Ach, ich wär so gerne,
Gar so gern bei dir.
|: Und wo im Tal die Linde steht,
Möcht ich so gern dich wiedersehn,
Ich hab dich gar so lieb.
3. Wenn jetzt mir befohlen,
Da zu halten stramm,
Der Teufel soll mich holen,
Gehe ich nicht ab.
|: So will ich vor dem Feinde stehn,
Und sollt mir auch ein Leid geschehn,
Ich hab dich ja so lieb.

Below is my incredibly rough translation...and I do mean rough(hope I'm not too far off the mark). Hopefully, a native speaker can provide a more satisfying translation.

Frustrating thing about translating - it's often difficult to convey the true meaning/emotion inherent in the native language. Interesting that I clearly understand the meaning when reading but I can't always adequately relay it in English. Especially difficult with poetry...getting the translation right AND making it rhyme!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the still valleys, in my dreams,
many times I’ve kissed your red mouth.

And in the valley where the Linden trees stand, I bid you farewell;
I love you so dearly.

Thousands of small stars greet you from me.
Oh, how wonderful it would be
to be with you.

If I’m now commanded,
to hold fast,
The devil shall take me,
If I do not obey.

So, I will stand before the enemy,
and should suffering happen to me,
I love you so dearly.

im verträumten Grund-> does not mean -> in my dreams,

Grund = ground

I don't know a good englisch translation but it try: the trustworthy ground/the place that he knows with his eyes closed/were he grew up/ where he knows every tree, flower ...

"Verträumter Grund" is "small, dreamy valley".
