Just heard an interesting piece on BBC Radio 4 about Django Reinhardt and how he returned to France after the German invasion and continued to play with his band in Paris through the rest of the war. The narator/author Miles Kington's interest was sparked when he came across a photograph of Django's band - including black and Jewish musicians - with a German officer - taken in 1943!. This officer, Luftwaffe Oberleutenant Dietrich Schulz-Köhn, was a jazz fan and protected the band when jazz was banned and not only Jews but Gypsies like Django were being deported for extermination.

The BBC's summary of the programme and a link can be found at:

To listen to the prog. online I found this address easier to use than the link on the page:

There is an article about Schulz-Köhn and others (in German) at this site: http://www.jazzzeitung.de/jazz/2002/11/ ... oehn.shtml
Schulz-Köhn is also mentioned in a book entitled: "Swing Under the Nazis: Jazz as a Metaphore for Freedom".

Dietrich Schulz-Köhn was also the author of two German WWII paratrooper songs (originally published in 1941): "Fallschirmjäger im Einsatz" (Wer kennt die Soldaten im grauen Kleid...) and "Die Fallschirm-MG-Kompanie" (Wir tragen nicht Schmuck und nicht Orden schwer... Lyrics by Oberjäger Müller). Recordings [modern] of these two songs can be found on the CD called "Grüne Teufel" (Lieder der deutschen Fallschirmtruppe).
