Help with a song Translation "Es Klappert Der Huf Am Ste"

Hi again, I am now working on a German song named:Es Klappert Der Huf Am Ste
Again, plz help me translate the lyric into English...............

Es klappert der Huf am Stege,
Wir ziehn mit dem Fähnlein ins Feld;
Blut´ger Kampf allerwege,
Dazu sind auch wir bestellt.
Wir reiten und reiten und singen,
Im Herzen die bitterste Not.
Die Sehnsucht will uns bezwingen
Doch wir reiten die Sehnsucht tot.

Dörfer und Städte flogen
Vorüber an unserem Blick.
Wir sind immer weiter gezogen,
Für uns gibt es kein Zurück.
Wir reiten durch Täler und Hügel,
Wo der Sommer in Blüte steht;
Es knirschen Zaumzeug und Zügel,
Der Wimpel hoch über uns weht.

Leis sinkt der Abend nieder,
Uns wird das Herz so schwer
Leiser werden die Lieder
Wir sehn keine Heimat mehr
Wir reiten und reiten und reiten
Und hören von fern schon die Schlacht
Herr, laß uns stark sein im Streiten
Dann sei unser Leben vollbracht.

I've just had the time to accomplish it - et voilà:

The hoof is clattering on the footbridge,
we are setting out into the field with the pennon;
bloody fighting everywhere,
for this also we are called.
We are riding and riding and singing,
[bearing] the bitterest suffering in the heart.
The longing wants to defeat us,
but we ride the longing dead.

Villages and cities flew
past our eyes.
We always moved forward,
there is no return for us.
We are riding through valleys and hills,
where the summer is in bloom;
bridles and reins are crunching,
the pennon is fluttering high above us.

Softly the evening is coming down,
our heart gets heavy so much.
The songs are getting softer,
we can't see the homeland any longer.
We are riding and riding and riding,
and already hearing the battle from the distance.
O Lord, let us be strong in the fight,
then, our life shall be accomplished.

------

It's a good choice - it's my favorite cavalry song...

LOL.............I am doing the frederick the great era's cavalry. I hope you will like it. :milwink: :milwink: :milwink:

By the way, you may like this movie. Although I don't know what they are saying, I can see that it is about a Prussian officer who fall in love with the frederick the great's sister(since the king is not married). Although the video change the ending to a happy one(I see from the internet that he should have been guillotined during the French revolution, I personally don't like it. For it portraiting frederick the great as the bad guy. Here is the link:

- Yes, (*vomiting*) it has really not been made in the spirit of Frederick the Great - look at all of these FRG faces...

I did a translation in verse form that still maintains the spirit of the song of Es klappert der Huf am Stege!

HOOFS ON THE FOOT BRIDGE CLATTER

Hoofs on the footbridge clatter,
Our pennon leads us ahead.
We hear the battle’s shatter,
By evening we may be dead.

We’re riding and riding and singing,
Our hearts are full of despair.
There’re longings to which we’re still clinging
But we are riding to rid us of fear.

Through city and village we’re riding,
Without any hope to return.
Our only goal is fighting,
Until our enemies burn.

Through hills and valleys we’re moving,
The summer stands in full bloom.
From the dust our banner is looming,
To lead us to victory or doom.

In silence the night is falling,
Surrounding our hearts with a chill.
Our singing slowly is stalling,
No home, all that’s left is our will.

We are riding and riding and riding,
We can hear the battle cry.
Strong and brave we enter the fighting,
With a prayer on our lips let us die.
