Post-WWII compositions

#1

Post by PzKpfw666 » 13 Jun 2006, 14:27

[Several topics dealing with post-WWII compositions have been merged by the host, Ivan Ž.]

This [so-called] "Großes Potpourri der Wehrmacht" has German military marches included. It has 36:20 length. I can hear the first one is "Westerwaldlied" and the last one is "Lili Marleen". It also includes some famous songs like "Panzerlied", "Erika". But most of it I can't identify what it is, even the melody is very acquaintance. I want to find out every march. Could you give me some informations?

Thanks a lot.

These are the first German marching songs I've ever heard - and still are my favourite :D They are also the very last German true old-school-style military recordings. They were made in 1959 in Hamburg by Musikkorps 6 der Bundeswehr under Hauptmann Gerhard Scholz and sung by Soldatenchor des Lehr-Bataillons der Heeresoffizierschule II. The medley is called "Drei Lilien, drei Lilien..." and it was composed by Gustav Kneip (1905-1992). The ridiculous title "Großes Potpourri der Wehrmacht" is just a modern, internet-fiction. It is a Bundeswehr medley - the most famous Bundeswehr medley actually. The included songs are mainly German folk songs from the XIX century; there is one WWI song and four from the III Reich period (there are no songs from WWII). All of them are simple soldiers' and hunters' love songs.

I
- Westerwaldlied (Anonym)
- Ein Schifflein sah ich fahren
- Ein Tiroler wollte jagen
- Wenn wir marschieren
- Argonnerwald, um Mitternacht
- Zehntausend Mann
- Schwarzbraun ist die Haselnuß
- Droben im Oberland
- Erika
- Wohlan, die Zeit ist kommen
- Das schönste Land der Welt
- Schatz, ach, Schatz

II
- Drei Lilien
- Im grünen Wald
- Ihr lustigen Hannoveraner
- Lore
- Wenn die Soldaten
- Funkerlied
- Hamburg ist ein schönes Städtchen
- Panzerwagenlied
- Ich bin ein freier Wildbretschütz
- Morgen marschieren wir
- Es wollt' ein Mädel früh aufstehn
- Lili Marleen

You can find the complete medley in top quality here (together with the record scans, correct lyrics and some additional info):

There is no full version of that particular piece you posted. That is an excerpt from a medley of many songs called "Drei Lilien, drei Lilien..."

Those were all cut from the post-WWII medley "Wohlauf, Kameraden!", composed by Gerhard Scholz and Gerhard Pätzig. It was performed by Musikkorps 6 der Bundeswehr under Major Gerhard Scholz and sung by Soldatenchor des Lehr-Bataillons der Heeresoffizierschule II (the very same performer as in the famous "Drei Lilien, drei Lilien..." medley).

I
- Heut' geht es an Bord
- Jetzt kommen die lustigen Tage
- Hoch auf dem gelben Wagen
- Ein Heller und ein Batzen
- Musketier' seins lust'ge Brüder
- Wohlauf, Kameraden, auf's Pferd
- Die blauen Dragoner
- Brandenburger Lied
- Schön blüh'n die Heckenrosen
- Weit ist der Weg zurück ins Heimatland
- Vom Barette schwankt die Feder
- Prinz Eugen

II
- Parademarsch der Spielleute
- Lockmarsch
- Edelweiß
- Die böse Schwiegermama
- Reserve hat Ruh'
- Hipp, hipp, hurrah!
- 's ist alles dunkel
- Schlesierlied
- Seeräuberlied
- Lippe-Detmold, eine wunderschöne Stadt
- Ich hab' mich ergeben
- Kameraden auf See
- Niedersachsenlied
- Regiment sein Straßen zieht
- Auf, Ansbach-Dragoner!

Ivan, thank you very much! It is "Wohlauf, Kameraden". And where can I get its full version, not fragments?

These look very much like the post war recordings I have on LP's. (bought in Canada in 1965) Even the sequence is the same. Alas, I don't have them on my computer, so I cannot help you download. It might pay off to scrounge some second hand records stores, the Goodwill, or the Salvation Army. I have picked up some pretty nice records there through the years.

The medley (a compilation actually) was made after WWII and had nothing to do with the HJ.

It contains the following songs:

- Wilde Gesellen vom Sturmwind durchweht
- Wir sind des Geyers schwarze Haufen
- Vom Barette schwankt die Feder
- Die blauen Dragoner
- Gute Nacht, Kameraden

The performer is a Hamburger Jugendgruppe conducted by Heinz Zabel. The songs originate from a Telefunken 45 rpm record "Wohlauf in Gottes schöne Welt", from where they were copied on the Documentary Series' LP "Wir Jungen tragen die Fahne" (vols. 3 & 4), where they were (shamelessly) published as HJ songs. And from this (fake HJ) LP, they were copied on the internet.
