Hello,

I own these photographs showing a Kriegsmarine band in the city of Breda in The Netherlands. I am looking for the name of the unit the band might belong to. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Hello

There are several pictures of Kriegsmarine troops of the 14. Schiffstammabteilung (S.St.A.) at Breda so it could be a musikkorps from this unit .

Regards Jos

As far as I could find out, the 14. S.St.A. moved to Breda in September 1940 and stayed there until the late stage of the war; the unit was stationed in the local castle, if I'm not mistaken (?), and the pictured band is also seen parading in the same castle.

The question is: was the 14. SStA the only Kriegsmarine unit stationed there during WWII?

Hi Ivan,

Yes, this training unit was the only Kriegsmarine unit in Breda. Around 1000-1500 man, each 3 months, that is how long the basic training took. As far as I understood from my correspondence with veterans, the Musikkorps belonged to the same unit.

Kind regards,

Maurice

BTW, it almost looks the same nowadays on the location where the first photo was taken.

This was taken at the Grote Markt, the square in the centre, same as your first picture.

Hi jopaerya, Ivan and Maurice,

Thank you for your help. So it would be the Musikkorps of 14. SStA. Interesting...

Nice photograph, by the way, Maurice.

If someone knows the name of the conductor(s) or something else, let us know please.

Thomas

I have a Delfs Blue Mug of 14 SSTA.
There is a sailingship and the word Roosendaal on it
That´s a neighboring city.
Unfortunatly I can´t post a foto

14 SSTA and 16 SSTA(Bergen op Zoom) had a joint defence-line from Hildernisse(Easter-Scheldte, Hildernisse ,Mattenburg ,Wouwse-Plantage)
It was `Sperr Gebiet´and as far as I know use for Pionier training purpose

The castle refererd to is I believe the KMA(Royal Millitairy Academy)

The 14. SSTA Rekrutes never stayed at the KMA (the Dutch Military Academy). It was in use by staff personell and some other WH (and SD/SS) units. The rekrutes stayed at the three other military facilities of Breda, The Seeligkazerne, Chassekazerne/Kloosterkazerne and Trip van Zoudtlandkazerne (then named CavalryKazerne)

The trupet man picture is taken on the Chassee kazerne.
The two taken outside the castle are taken on what is now the castlesquare (kasteelplein) The guards house, the two centry posts and all the buildings on the lefthand side of the bridge (2nd picture) are gone. Those buildings housed the stabble's.

The previously posted (and some additional) photos in an album of a former unit member, with his captions (he sure liked exclamation marks).
