Gustav Gnauck (1866-1951)
Gustav Gnauck (1866-1951)
Dear everyone,
Has anyone ever seen a photo of this historically-constantly-neglected composer?
In my humble opinion, the man was a real "Herms Niel" of the Wilhelminian Era (and way ahead of his time), and I personally love each and every composition of his that I've heard. He remained very popular during the Third Reich period, WWII, and shortly after WWII as well. But after that - nothing. He was the main soldiers' march composer before Niel appeared on the scene. And today this tallented military composer/arranger gets no attention in the military-musical circles, as far as I could notice, which is a real shame. He's been (and will remain) at the very top of my personal favourites list for a long, long time
It would be also interesting to find out more about Gnauck's Third Reich activities. I've noticed he composed a couple of RAD marches, but was he a member of the organization? I assume he must have known Niel in any case.
And I would really like to add a face to his music if possible.
Cheers,
Ivan

A newspaper article from September 8, 1901 about the daughter of Gustav Gnauck: http://cdnc.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/cdnc?a=d&d=SFC19010908.2.47
I'll keep searching for any items of interest.
BTW Ivan,on which CDs or LPs are recordings of Mr. Gnauck's works available?
Thanks!

Thanks very much for these interesting additions!
A great hit of his (which was later recorded by the SA, and during WWII by Lw) can be heard here, in an early, acoustic variant:

That's the problem: basically nowhere.MarshallJones1970 wrote:BTW Ivan,on which CDs or LPs are recordings of Mr. Gnauck's works available?
As you surely know, there's a composition of his on a recently released CD which will be reviewed soon, but that would be it. Some of his works can be found on youtube.Ivan Ž. wrote:And today this tallented military composer/arranger gets no attention in the military-musical circles

Re: Gustav Gnauck!
Thanks Ivan! I will listen to these songs now.
Re: Gustav Gnauck!
The songs themselves are folk songs of course, they're not his works; Gnauck arranged them and composed a march intro for each.MarshallJones1970 wrote:Thanks Ivan! I will listen to these songs now.
They all come from his series of compositions called Deutsche Soldaten-Liedermärsche (his marches over soldier-folk-songs).
But his arrangements were excellent, and had that jolly/jumpy/enthusiastic style which Niel & his arrangers later used as well. That's why these works of Gnauck's remained so popular in the army for decades later.
Cheers,
Ivan

Re: Gustav Gnauck!
I actually listened to this march today many times, but I've only now heard of the recording by the Marinemusikkorps Ostsee, thanks to you (I knew some other). It is a march over the popular song "Wem Gott will rechte Gunst erweisen", which I also like very much It's nice to hear a more recent recording of his music/arrangement.MarshallJones1970 wrote:Anker Auf!
