Der Zarewitsch: Wolgalied
[Topic renamed by the host, Ivan Ž.]
Yesterday I saw a documentary about Stalingrad and there they said, that the troops of the 6th army sang often "The Wolgalied" which was a big hit among them. Its from an opera and very bombastic and emotional.
Does anybody know who was the singer and where I can find this hit?
Thanks in advance
Regards Philipp

Hello HaEn,
thanks for the answer. The cover would be very interesting.
I found it now, it's from Lehar - Der Zarewitsch title: das Wolgalied
very very impressing, makes always a sad mood, because you have to think about the tragedy of the sixth army.
For everybody thats interested, the original is sung by Rudolf Schock - Wolgalied. But Freddy Quinns song isnt too bad too Never thought I gonna like Freddy Quinn lol
Regards Philipp

I wouldn't trust everything I hear in documentaries. Most of such information is pure fiction, made up to make the "show" more dramatical.philipp0408 wrote:makes always a sad mood, because you have to think about the tragedy of the sixth army.
No, the original was NOT sung by Rudolf Schock. The song was composed in 1926 and Schock recorded it 30 years later.philipp0408 wrote:the original is sung by Rudolf Schock
Cheers,

Sorry for a very late response but I didn't see this until tonight.
Die Wolgalied is from the operetta Der Zarewitsch by Franz Lehar.
The first recording was made by the Austrian tenor Richard Tauber who also sang the lead at the first performance in 1927. Lehar sort of wrote this role for him.
One of best interpretations of Die Wolgalied is made by the Swedish/Russian Tenor Nicolai Gedda made in 1968 with Rita Streich as Sonja
