'Aktion Bayreuth' - Can anyone shed light on it?

#1

Hello all,
I have a Soldbuch to a member of LW Flak units (namely Flak.Rgt 36 and Flakschw.Abt 399 (which I believe was located near Darmstadt)). On 9th April 1944 to 5th August 1944 he went from Flakschw.Abt 399 and served in 'Aktion Bayreuth'.

Would anyone be able to shed any light on what 'Aktion Bayreuth' was? Is it a relocation of units to protect the Bayreuth Festival or something else?

Maybe it had something to do with the setting up of Konzentrationslager Bayreuth, which began operation in June of that year http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/KZ-Au%C3%9 ... r_Bayreuth?
Cheers,
Max

Now that's an interesting possibility. I hadn't even considered that due to him being in Flak.

It does seem rather incongruous but there was some aircraft control systems manufacturing nearby for which some of the prison labor was utilized and the word "Aktion" to me raises a red flag that it may be related to the Camp. Pure speculation though.
Cheers,
Max

Interesting. I have a photo album with a pasted in Urlaubsschein from 16th of July 1944 that also mentions Aktion Bayreuth. The guy, Uffz. Oskar Langer, was a long time serving Luftwaffe member, last known unit schw.Flak.Abt.460, who had just transfered to the Heer on 10th of July 1944 according to his own notes, in an Inf.Ers.u.Ausb.Btl. But on August 12th, 1944, he was transferred to the SS.Pz.Gren.Rgt.48 of the SS-Division Nederland. So, here as well, a Luftwaffe AND SS connection?

Just noticed that in the same Soldbuch as I previously mentioned the unit entry below 'Aktion Bayreuth' is Sammellager MG 81 so it certainly looks to be related to a camp rather than the festival.
