15./Sturm-Regiment query

#1

Post by Bob Lyons » 01 Apr 2014, 02:33

Hi all,

I have a grouping of documents to Jaeger (later Obergefreiter) Josef Spatzenegger of the 15./Sturm-Regiment, and was hoping that some one may have a bit more information on the soldier or the unit he was with.

I have the following document to him:
Ost Medaille
Wound badge in black and silver
EK 2
Luftwaffe Ground Combat Badge
Para badge
Kreta cuff title

So he obviously did some fighting on Crete, his 'Kreta' document is signed by Student.

Thanks in advance

Cheers

Bob

Hello Bob,

Josef Spatzenegger's award document for his Verwundetenabzeichen in Silber, wound dated June 8, 1944 and designating his unit as the 8./Fallsch.Jg.Rgt. 6 shows that he took part in the Normandy fighting (Carentan) during the summer of 1944. The Fallsch.Jg.Rgt. 6 was later in June and July placed under 17.SS-Pz.Gren.Div. „Götz von Berlichingen“ and then 2.SS-Pz.Div. „Das Reich“. The Regimental commander during this time was the famous Major (later Oberstleutnant) Dr. Friedrich August Freiherr von der Heydte. See link for more information...

Hi Krollspell,

Thanks for the updates, I figured he was in Normandy with those dates, and with the 6th FJ Rgt, but you certainly filled in a few gaps that I wasn't aware of with the host of extra info. Thanks very much, hopefully he survived the war, certainly he saw a fair bit of action with Crete, Russia and then Normandy.

I have some nice portrait shots of him too, it was a nice group that turned up here locally, and I was lucky enough to be in the right spot at the time. :milwink:

Thanks again, your info is really appreciated.

Cheers

Bob
