2./Ers.u.Aus.Abt.Rgt H.G. Dog Tag
2./Ers.u.Aus.Abt.Rgt H.G. Dog Tag
Hi,
I recently picked up this Erkennumgsmarke (dog tag) for the replacement and training unit H.G.,
(2./Ers. u. Ausb. Rgt. H.G.), and was wondering if there would be some one who could fill in a bit more
info on the unit that this soldier was attached to.
I believe they were involved in some fighting around Normandy after D-Day, and the unit was also involved
in some of the Arnhem battles.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
Cheers
Bob

Re: 2./Ers.u.Aus.Abt.Rgt H.G. Dog Tag
Hi Bob,
2./Ersatz und Ausbildungs Regiment was a training unit stationed in the centre of Holland. (Amersfoort, Utrecht and Harderwijk.)
On 7 sept 1944 they were send to Hechtel in Belgium (20 miles south of Eindhoven). There they fought together with FJR 20 against the Welsh and Scots Guards. Completely surrounded they had to give up at 12 sept. Remnants succeeded to reach Son near Eindhoven, but they were surprised there by US paras (101 airborne) on 17 sept. What was left scattered to the four winds and was later taken up by Kampfgruppe Chill. The month Sept and Oct they fought the British 49 div. and the Canadians in the South of Holland.
As far as I know they were never in Normandy.
regards

Many thanks Maarten, that is exactly what I was after, my info on the Normandy part of it was incorrect then.
Thanks again, and best wishes.

Emmanuel,
Undoubtly, but you forget (as I did in my post) the prefix "HG" which points to the Herman Göring training unit. And they were in Holland and not in Normandy.

Re: 2./Ers.u.Aus.Abt.Rgt H.G. Dog Tag
Thanks again Maarten, and you put me on the right path mate, I have been doing some searching, and found this on the WAF, posted by "Rick Admiraal: :-
The Division component in Holland was:
Ersatz-Rgt. Hermann Göring renamed Fallsch.Panzer-Ers. und Ausb.Rgt. Hermann Göring. In 1944 it occupied the following garrisons:
Regimentsstab: Utrecht
I. Btl. (1.-7.Kp.): Hilversum
II. Btl. (8.-12.Kp.): Amsterdam
III. Btl. (13.16.Bttr.): Amersfoort
IV. Btl. (17.-19.Kp.): Velten/24 km NNW of Berlin
In September 1944 it was reassigned from Wehrmacht Befehlshaber Niederlande to Fallschirm-AOK 1 and sent into combat, presumably in the Arnhem area.
Is this the breakdown by chance ??
Best

And a bit I also found on the net re Kampfgruppe Chill :-
Kampfgruppe Chill
As the 346th Infantry Division moved away from the Canadian front, the Canadians found themselves opposed by elements of the 85th Infantry Division, placed under the command of Generalleutnant Kurt Chill and consequently referred to as Battle Group Chill.
The Kampfgruppe consisted of
a) Remnants of Grenadier (Infantry) Regiment 1054 and Grenadier Regiment 1055
b) Field Replacement Battalion 185
c) The 1st Battalion of Parachute Regiment 2
d) The 1st and 3rd Battalions of Parachute Regiment 6
e) Training and Replacement Regiment "Hermann Goering"
f) Artillery Regiment 185

And for general interest sake, this is the very vehicle command flag from Gen.Lt Hermann Plocher's vehicle he surrendered to
the Canadians in, on the 8th of May 1945, in Holland and brought back by a Canadian soldier at wars end.
