Help identifying medals acquired by my Army Grandfather
Help identifying medals acquired by my Army Grandfather
My grandfather was in the Army in Germany and captured/killed a few german soldiers. He came home with a number of things including guns and swords. Since his passing, my grandmother has dispersed them to the various children (they got the guns and good stuff) and grandchildren. She gave me a box of German/Nazi patches and medals. i could really use some help identifying them. I have no idea what to do with these as I cant see hanging them up on my wall. Any help guidance as to a collector who may value these and what they are would be greatly appreciated. Here are a few pics. i can provide more of each item if someone needs.
Also, is any of this stuff worth money to collectors? it has sentimental value to me, but it is just sitting in a box in my hope chest
Thanks in advance

Re: Help identifying medals acquired by my Army Grandfather
The cloth insignia below the Hitler Youth Badge looks to be a trade patch for a military specialist, but I can not make out the details properly to identify what trade it refers to.

Yes, it all has value to collector/historians.....
Here's a quick ID of your stuff.... starting top left to right.
1. RAD (Reichs Arbeits Dienst) members lapel pin..... $18./25. retail
2. Damjansk sleeve shield (Award)... w/backing.....$200./300. retail
3. Army hat wreath & cockade......$18./25. retail (if pins intact...less if broken off.)
4. Round enamel pin. RLB (Reichs Luftschutzbund) lapel pin....$25./35. retail
5. WW 1 Black Wound Badge... $25./40. retail
6. Round enamel NSDAP Membership Pin... $65./90. retail
7. (below) Diamond enamel pin- Hitler Youth members pin....$45./65. retail
8 Hanger w/"shells" - unofficial "men-in-service" type pin.. $10./12. retail
9. Army 4 Yr. "buttonhole ribbon" for civilian wear... $15./20. retail
10. Luftwaffe (air force) Visor hat eagle.... $25./45. retail (if pins intact!)
11. Pocket writing/note pad... (Civilian, not really a military item thou I've had several turn up in vet. lots before.... Value unknown) but it is "Silver" I'm pretty sure!
12. Luftwaffe sleeve Speciality patch... "Rangefinder/Sound Locator (Flak)" used $18./20. retail.
Most is quite common so realistically...you could expect "$200./250.00" for the lot IMO "dealer price", that's what I'd pay if you brought them into my "retail space" at my Flea Market....
Anyone who collects or deals would gladly "take these off your hands"... me included!

Wow! As a collector, myself (although not on the level of you), I'm surprised you put the value of the "Arbeits Dank" pin so low. Just my opinion, of course.John G. wrote:RAD (Reichs Arbeits Dienst) members lapel pin..... $18./25. retail

It was your Grandfather's  ... you either put it in a box and forget about it until you're old enough to learn to appreciate it yourself OR give it to someone else in the family who is.brinks56 wrote:Thanks a bunch guys. Excellent advice. The $200 will be gone in a blink of an eye.Ian Hulley wrote:It was your Grandfather's  ... you either put it in a box and forget about it until you're old enough to learn to appreciate it yourself OR give it to someone else in the family who is.brinks56 wrote:Thanks a bunch guys. Let's see what it sells for, bearing in mind the Estand is supposed to be collector to collector prices ...

Re: Help identifying medals acquired by my Army Grandfather
Hello there,
I agree with John's assessment of the value of the items. I will state that I am currently selling the exact RAD enamel (pinback not stickpin) at $39.95 but it has not been purchased as of yet, so I don't think the general estimate of $25.00 is out of the question by any means. As far as where these items can be sold I would stick with collector forums rather than going the craigslist route. In my experience, there are not only some scary individuals on craigslist but everyone is looking for the deal of the century. I would recommend that you only accept paypal and ship with tracking to protect both you and the buyer. Can you share some photos of the swords and other items for reference please? I know you said other members of the family got these items but perhaps you have some photos. Did you get your Grandfather's US uniforms and items as well?

Re: Help identifying medals acquired by my Army Grandfather
Values are always "subjective", sometimes "regional", and usually "over-blown".... when I have something for sale, it's priced to sell.... so my prices, especially on "common stuff" tend to be realistic (Same when I vale "stuff" here, normally range of what I'd sell it for if I were selling it).... I would only buy it in the first place with resale in mind, as I already have an example in my collection (as does nearly ever collector out there.... it's a "common" enamel pin... technically this pin is actually a "Rememberance pin" for doing one's RAD (RADwJ) Service (minimum 1 Yr.)...
There's always $5. or $10. "wiggle-room" (either side of the scale...)

William (and...)
Thanks... nothing wrong with your pin or pricing, again.. values are subjective and "usually there's wiggle room" if anyone is really interested, I'm sure. I agree with your assessment of CRAIGS LIST.... dangerous waters....
I agree...Brinks56, please show anything that is related....(Sword, etc.) ... could be something special....?

Let me see what I can get for you. Everyone on here has been so helpful. I will be seeing my grandmother this weekend and will take some picks of what she has. I will also send emails to the rest of the fam to send some pics.William Kramer wrote:Hello there,

thanks again to everyone for their input. This is the nicest forum I have ever been in and I am not even a real member of the community.
