Re: WW2 German Mine Rescue Medal
Hi all, Please take a look at links for a better picture, yes I agree the Medal looks a little battered and possibly re-chromed/painted?, but in my short time (compared to many) I have been collecting, I have never come across a replica of this medal, thanks again to all that reply.

Copperpotuk,
This Mine Rescue Service Medal is a reproduction....no where near the quality, detail, or finish of an original. They've been making restrikes of ALL 3rd Reich medals & badges.....including the Mine Rescue Service decoration.....since I was a new collector (back in the 50s.....), though this would be one not as heavily copied as some others....

Re: WW2 German Mine Rescue Medal
Does anyone know what were the criteria for being awarded this medal?
Re: WW2 German Mine Rescue Medal
According to Littlejohn & Dodkins & Angolia, the Mine Rescue Service Decoration (Grubenwehr-Ehrenzeichen) was 1st instituted on 13 Nov. 1936 as a 50mm round pinback decoration (1st type), which was superseded on Jan. 30, 1938 by a smaller 35mm silver medal (2nd type).
It was awarded to/for:
1. Members of the Mine Rescue Serice who preformed outstanding rescue work, particularily at the risk of their own lives.
2. Persons (not members of the Mine Rescue Serv. - doctors, etc.) who voluntarily risked thier lives to save others durning a Mine disaster.
3. Persons who rendered valuable service to the organization & developement of the Mine Rescue Service.
4. All members of the Mine Rescue Service on completion of 15 Years service. It could be awarded for less time to those "invalided out" as a result of injuries incurred "in the line of duty".
Much scarcer than generally thought....few original awards out there....most are quality copies. Original examples have formed ribbons with pinbacks (like Faithful Service awards) unless mounted on bars....(exceptions noted of course....)

I thought I would revive this old thread with my Mine Rescue Awards ..
Both types, the frosty silver-washed and the bright plated.
and the reverse ..
Cheers, Ian.

just out of curiosity, considering you have both in hand, is there one you prefer to the other?Ian Hulley wrote:I thought I would revive this old thread with my Mine Rescue Awards ..

Re: WW2 German Mine Rescue Medal
Hi William, personally I prefer the silver-wash type ... possibly because I only just got it last month and possibly because the plated one would have been really garish and shiny when newly awarded.William Kramer wrote: just out of curiosity, considering you have both in hand, is there one you prefer to the other?
