Danzig Red Cross ?
Danzig Red Cross ?
Hi, Jim Page here. I recently inherited My father's WW2 German medals , he collected them in post-war Munich. I have done much research on them, the one that confuses Me is the Danzig Red Cross. any idea of It's rarity, value, reason for issue ? I have no idea how to post a pic on this forum. I can send pics if anyone is interested. Thanks
Re: Danzig Red Cross ?
The large eagle with HK at the bottom left is a hood ornament I think.

Hello there,
Welcome to the forum. Can you please post front and back photos of the specific badge you are asking about? I believe the white enamel piece, correct?

I'll try and post Sunday, not having much luck posting pics.

Here's a pic of the front, the rear is unmarked and gilt metal with a pinback.

Re: Danzig Red Cross ?
What exactly are you confused about?
Danzig was a Free City (as the badge says) under League of Nations mandate between the wars. This badge must date from that period.
Danzig only had a population of about 400,000 and only a small minority of them are likely to have been in the Red Cross.
Furthermore, the great majority of the 95% of the population who were German probably did not look back on the Free State period with any particular fondness and so I doubt many would have set any particular value on preserving its minor baubles.
I would therefore imagine it is a comparitive rarity.
Cheers,
Sid.

Re: Danzig Red Cross ?
The Danzig Red Cross award is VERY rare. Here is the version without the swastika.
