This piece has been surrounded by a lot of controversy. It is a FAKE. Supposedly, It was sold to a Chinese collector for over a million dollars. Unfortunately the fakers did not do their research. They claimed it was found in a barn with other items in the old East Germany in the 1990's. But the real one is actually in a vault in the German History Museum in Berlin and has been there since the end of the war. No one bothered to check it whereabouts. It just goes to show you the lengths one will go to sell a fake for large sums of money. Some collectors and researchers still refuse to accept this as a fake even though the real one exists in a museum. When you spend a million dollars you don't want to hear the truth. This also goes for a large amount of items that are being passed off as real. There is a vast amount of "gems" like this one that are being hawked as real when in fact they are fakes. Collectors need to do a little research before buying items of this stature.

Wow! That would be hard to explain to the old lady! (If I had one!). We've all bought a "ringer" or two, but that one is the record! I don't feel so bad! Thanks.

OUCH ! :o

That one hurts in any language :| I guess if the buyer has/had a Million U$ to spend on the fake he would have sufficient left over to make the vendor pay VERY heavily for that one :milwink:

Göring was awarded his Grand Cross of the Iron Cross for the Luftwaffe's achievements in the Western Campaign.

He should have given it back in the Autumn of '40 after the RAF did their job.

Spot on assessment Ian..I bet some of the top *Nazi's* thought the same.

Or during the Stalingrad supply air lift,

or during any of the daylight bombing runs by the USAAC.
