Real or Fake

#1

Post by Gregory314 » 05 Aug 2015, 03:17

I purchased this order of the rising sun 8th class and I think I got a knock off. The ribbon has a bit of a different sheen then others I have viewed online. The ring looks good. I don't know. Anyone have any tips on authenticating? Thanks in advance. -Greg

Looks o.k. to me.... these cover a long time period, so minor variations in ribbon wouldn't bother me unless synthetic... the box looks good except missing the "tray" from the photos...these are fairly common in today's world, used to be much harder to fine since few Pacific vets ran into many Japanese medals as souvenirs. E-Bay has changed that.

So here is the deal. Looking at the medal itself, It looks correct. The others I have seen on line have a strait ribbon. I pulled a fiber thread from the ribbon (very small) and decided to give it the burn test....It burned sythetic...Not like cotton. The ribbon looks too shiny...Think it is fake

What I mean by strait. Is that the sewn horizontal lines in the ribbon are strait. Not wavy like in the above picture.

The weave of the ribbon IS straight, what you refer to is the 'watermark' of the ribbon ... usually a sign that it's silk. If it melted into a ball that's not a good sign of pre-'45 manufacture.

I donot think it's worthy to make a fake "勳八等白色桐葉章" cause the real ones are made of silver and extremely cheap

You do realize that the "Order of the Rising Sun" is still issued, and the 8th class was issued from 1875 till it was abolished in 2003?

Your case was issued no earlier than 1938 - thus the Showa era December 25, 1926, through January 7, 1989 - since the 7th and 8th classes of Rising Sun boxes had 2 columns of kanji till around that time, as opposed to the single column in your case. See my case posted

If you would like to post a better picture of the kanji on the reverse and the suspension ball it would go a long ways to dating your medal.

Cheers

This is the best picture I take. Please share your insight on how to date the age, I would love to know. -Greg
