This is the First Class with Star set and the things that related to it. The group belonged to a spanish falangist leader that scaped from the comunist zone of Spain during the Spanish Civil War on board of the ship "Admiral Graf Spee", the postcard was written to him by crew members.

Hope you enjoy,

Pablo

Can anyone tell us more details of the award? It was mainly a civilian award, right? What was the criteria for it?

Ford award

#13

Post by Matt Gibbs » 16 Sep 2004, 16:14

Hello all;
It was the highest award for NON Germans bestowed by the Third Reich.

Henry Ford was the first American and the 4th recipient of the Großkreuz des Deutschen Adlerordens. He recieved it on 30th July 1938, his 75th birthday. The decoration was given "in recognition of [Ford's] pioneering in making motor cars available for the masses." The award was accompanied by a personal congratulatory message from Adolf Hitler. [Detroit News, July 31, 1938.]
Newer information about the role of Ford and it's german subsiduary makes interesting reading - however, he accepted the award as coming from the "Germna nation" not the personage of Adolf Hitler.

Kind regards

Matt Gibbs

What other Americans

#14

Post by William Kramer » 22 Sep 2004, 23:36

Hello all,

What other Americans were awarded this rare medal? Please let me know either way. I am a huge Ford guy and I am glad to hear that Ford didn't accept this as a follower of Hitler, rather a man of Germanic ethnicity.

Thank you.
