SS-Obersturmführer Westermann

SS-Ostuf Westermann.
In 1939 he was adjudant within the Staff from the SS-Heimwehr 'Danzig' and on 24-10-1939 he received the Danziger Cross 1. Class.

Who can tell me more about this officer and who knows his Christian name????
Because he was SS-Ostuf in 1939 I guess he had a higher rank during WW-2, but I can't find anything about a certain Westermann here or on the internet.

Thanks,
Mike

Hello Hugo,

Thank you very much.
So there's nothing known about this man during WW-2, hhhmmm.

But at least I already have this and that's always better then having nothing at all.

Greetings,
Mike

Hi Mike and all,

Ostuf. Harro Westermann was KIA / died on Sep 12th 1939. Here is the entry in the "Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge" database.
Nachname: Westermann
Vorname: Harro
Dienstgrad: Obersturmführer
Geburtsdatum: 30.10.1914
Geburtsort:
Todes-/Vermisstendatum: 12.09.1939
Todes-/Vermisstenort:

Harro Westermann ruht auf der Kriegsgräberstätte in Braunschweig-Hauptfriedhof (Bundesrepublik Deutschland) .
Endgrablage: Abteilung 70 Grab 4
The place of death is not provided. My question therefore : does anyone know if he was KIA during the short time engagement of SS-Heimwehr Danzig in the Polish Campaign ?
After the Danzig fightings (Postamt, etc.) the SS-Heimwehr was used for coastal security duties also until it was dissolved in september 39 already.
This would be a posthumous award of the Danzig Cross btw.

Best regards
Bernd

Rolf Michaelis (page 65 of the Polish edition) writes that SS-Obersturmführer Westermann (Adjutant of SS Heimwehr-Danzig) was KIA during the battle of Oxhofter Kampe (Polish: Kepa Oksywska).

There was also one more German officer from SS Heimwehr-Danzig KIA during the battle of Oxhofter Kampe - SS-Obersturmführer Oppel.

Memories of motorcyclist Leo Wilm regarding the death of SS-Obersturmführer Westermann - quoted by Michaelis on pages 51 - 52:

"Our first attack was repulsed at the foot of Debogorze. Poles were defending Debogorze very bravely, additionally a small brook and swamps were facilitating the defence. Only one road led to Debogorze. There we found ourselves under well-aimed fire and suffered high casualties. During the reconnaissance adjutant of the battalion Obersturmführer Westermann was KIA. He was shot in the head while riding in a sidecar of my motorcycle. Motorcycle was destroyed and I managed to find a shelter in a nearby ditch. Only in the evening me and my companions managed to retreat. Due to the heavy Luftwaffe bombing we did not carry out an attack against Debogorze on that day."

Map of the Oxhofter Kampe, operations in this area in period 11.09.1939 - 12.09.1939, Dębogórze can be seen:

Hallo Mike,

I´m the grandson of Harro Westermann. We found your blog-discussions by occasion, surfing in the internet. Well, you are interested in the military life of my grandfather. How can I help you?

Best regards
